The Overwatch Open tournament has a pretty huge broadcast TV deal in the works. E-League revealed in an official press release that the finals of the of the Overwatch Open tournament will be broadcast live on TBS with Live Streaming Twitch Coverage. The European and North American Regional Finals for the open tournament will be streamed live on Twitch.tv.
The Overwatch Open will feature an online phase run by FACEIT for European and North American teams, including Regional and Grand Finals. The Grand Finals will be held at the Turner Studios ELEAGUE arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The Grand Final will be broadcast live on TBS later on.
Players will be competing for a prize total of $300,000. This will be the largest Overwatch tournament prize ever. The tournament begins on FACEIT starting July 23. Online rounds will then make way for a playoff round played Friday through Sunday, August 26-28. The top eight teams from each of these regional playoffs will then advance to the finals.
Speaking on the news of eSports arriving on TBS, Turner Sports’ Craig Berry stated: “This opportunity to feature Blizzard’s popular Overwatch further expands our eSports offerings and aligns ELEAGUE with a game that is widely embraced by the community. We look forward to bringing the same level of production and storytelling capabilities we’ve demonstrated throughout the first season of ELEAGUE to this championship event.”
eSports going to TBS is pretty exciting at the moment. It’s clearly a booming industry and “eSport.”
Pretty nuts and I'm glad it's happening. This way maybe esports will become way more mainstream. Tbs is really shaping up to be a good network for this new age albeit their crawl is a bit slow though at least they are making decisions like this one.
