Pose For Overwatch’s Tracer Being Replaced!
Blizzard’s Overwatch has been praised for its diverse lineup of characters. From males, to females, to animals, they have them all. Yet, as one fan notes, followed by many more, one of their female characters, Tracer, seems to fall into a stereotype via a victory pose you can see in full below.
“The first time I saw that pose after a game it completely took me out of it. It was jarring,” says a fan. “It didn’t fit the character that has been established at all and seemed very out of place. Maybe the pose isn’t supposed to be about her butt but that is how it turned out. Do the male characters showcase their buttcheeks in any of their poses?”
Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has responded to this, and noted that even the team at Blizzard was unsure about this pose. As such, they are changing it.
“We’ll replace the pose. We want *everyone* to feel strong and heroic in our community. The last thing we want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated or misrepresented. Apologies and we’ll continue to try to do better.
We actually already have an alternate pose that we love and we feel speaks more to the character of Tracer. We weren’t entirely happy with the original pose, it was always one that we wrestled with creatively. That the pose had been called into question from an appropriateness standpoint by players in our community did help influence our decision—getting that kind of feedback is part of the reason we’re holding a closed beta test”
Overwatch releases May 24th.
This is so silly. We have gone from one end of the spectrum to the other; too much sexuality has turned into all sexuality or even suggestive poses are being removed. There literally is so little left for people to complain about that they are bothered by victory poses.
Normally I'd feel bad that they are sacrificing artistic license for political correctness but it seems like the complaint is more on the side of the pose just not fitting the character instead of just people complaining about it being too sexy, and the developers were also on the fence about it so I guess I'm alright with it. If they do give in to the PC police though I hope they know that it's a slippery slope.
