    and i quote
"The success of MOBA titles indicates a subtle but important shift in the way people like to play online. Offering the same fast paced action as first-person shooter games, MOBAs have quickly become one of the most popular game genres worldwide, growing their share of the overall MMO category from 16% to 24% in just the last year."
    Also of interests
"as World of Warcraft now also offers microtransactions and a partial free-to-play component. It is a sign that things are changing, especially for the major publishers, when a company like Activision retires Titan and, instead, doubles down on Heroes of the Storm."

I don't know if MOBA's really count as MMO's. They both have thousands or even millions of players playing at once, but the big difference is the way MOBA's are instanced while traditional MMORPG's are not.

To be honest ... i don't play MOBAs myself .. although the camera is not the problem. I just don't like e-sports that much.

But I can't deny they are popular.

    Except Mobas are not mmos

The "official" definition of an moba:

Multiplayer online battle arena(MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy (ARTS), originated as a subgenre of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre of video games, in which a player controls a single character in one of two teams.

The "official" definition of an mmorpg:

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) blend the genres of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games, potentially in the form of web browser-based games, in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a world.

What surprises me is the report implies MOBA as a sub-genre of MMO.

"their share of the overall MMO category"

    This could get Interesting.

Playing an MMO means you could potentially square off against dozens if not hundreds of people at any given moment, sorry 5v5 doesn't fit that definition.

Yeah, I think there is some silliness to consider a MOBA as a MMORPG. Did nobody notice that when you play your second game, you are back down to lvl 1? It really is much closer to Call of Duty and other multiplayer FPS than MMORPGs.

Also, the whole thing about Activism shutting down Titan to focus on Heroes of the Storm is wrong. Titan was shut down because Activism made a contract with Bungie to build Destiny. Destiny and Titan were basically the same game, so once they had the team from Bungie, they no longer needed their own team working on a similar title.

I think the massively multiplayer means lots of players on one given game world at one time, which is only found in virtual worlds, MMORPGs, and not in lobby-based games like LoL.

It's an interesting report, and maybe there is a shift. However, I know a lot of people will play games like Heros of the Storm for a little while, and then turn around and play WoW. Why? Because they offer different things. They aren't really the same type of games.

I think it is a mistake for MMORPGs to try incorporating MOBA-like PvP and elements into their games. See GW2's PVP for example, with that Stronghold map. Instead they should have focused on mass PVP like World vs World.

Yes, that's also a good thing. I've known quite a few good amount of players who were playing MMORPGs and then switched to MOBAs. Eventually the went back to playing MMORPGs as they are two incompatible type of games.

And the percentage is bound to increase. DoTA 2 boasts the biggest tournament payout in the history of eSports, LoL has numbers. The new generation of children will be even more tech-savvy than this one. I wouldn't be surprised to see big companies buying ad space during breaks in about ten, twenty years or so.

Grinder they are different. I don't know of anyone that has completely switched though. I just know of people that will play WoW for a few hours, then go and play some DoTA or something, usually while they are still logged into Battle.net so they can still chat with their friends between matches.

They certainly aren't the same types of games, though. I cannot even begin to see MOBA type games completely taking over the market because what they offer is different. It's not better or worse, just different.
