    So, i have a red star on top of the tree this season, and it reminded me of you people, so i decided to take a low quality image of it!

    Of course, in Metro 2033 the book Artyom reads claims that the Red Stars on the Kremlin are possessed. Is that star glowing, Mediaprobe? :p Ha ha!

    The Biomass - the gigantic mutant under the Kremlin - is using the stars as "antennae" to broadcast its psychic call that compels people to come to the Kremlin (so the Biomass can absorb them).

    So, it's not the stars themselves, it's the "thing" in the basement, LOL.
