I found in the past few years that a big part of the fun I have in MMORPG type of games is a result of trading/using the auction house, making game currency. I am addicted to playing the market, hoarding gold or any type of ingame currency. At times I'll give up grinding for a while and just play the AH/market for days if I see a good opportunity to make money.

I rarely ever sell what I make for real currency. It's just fun to trade.

Anyone else feel the same or am I just a freak who should be looking for a different type of game to play? (Kidding - I ain't leaving. I want all your gold.)

I'm like you. In most MMORPGs I find myself with LOADS of money without spending it on anything. Maybe I'm just that cheap?! :D

It's useful in Entropia Universe (which is the only MMORPG I play, mainly for the economics) since the game currency can be transferred to USD (legally) and it's damn hard to survive in the universe since most things you do end up costing more $$$ than what you make. :)

I'm the type who ends up saving tenfold more than what I'll ever need over the course of any game, simply because I can. I like auctioning, but I never really considered making mad ingame bank with them. I just kind of feel bad if I do it. Whenever I farm something, even if I'd spent hours, I always sell it lower than the current lowest market price just so I can make it back quickly.

I know there are entire books written on the subject, and some people are really into analysing auctions and figure out how to make the most out of your investment in the shortest amount of time, but at the end of the day it's still just virtual cash.

For about 2 years in wow I was pretty into the Auction house Scene. I made so much gold that I didn't really have anything to spend it on, I just kind of did it for fun. At first I was just tired of always being poor so I decided to read up some gold blogs and do what they did. I used my army of high level alts and founded a crafting empire.

Then after about a year I had everything running so efficiently that I just kind of went on auto-pilot and bought my friends super expensive gifts all the time. Then earlier this year I just kinda stopped with it all gradually over time, but I do miss how excited I got when I had a mailbox full of big sales.

I love making money on MMORPGs because it's so fun. The economies of the game are always fascinating. The marketplaces helped me understand how the economy worked. I know a lot about economics now, but I think I must give MMORPGs some credit for providing hands-on experience with dealing with the concepts of inflation, the stock market (but with items), retail, and flipping.

For me, the point of making virtual money was to one day sell that for real money, but I haven't really done anything to do that yet. I doubt I actually will, but it's an idea I can toss around for a bit. Even if I don't make real money off of this, I still believe that it has given me a lot of experience.

I want all of your money too! >:D

I hate trading with people I try and avoid it mostly I use auction house because the problem with trading with people is you run into a lot of shady people if your not paying close attention you will get scammed in a second it doesn't matter what kind of MMO your playing.

Way back in the early days of TBC, I turned 1 gold I sent ot an alt into enough to twink her out completely with 400g left over (back when that was a considerable amount of gold still). I never saw the draw much. Eve online has a far more interesting market system, but it is dominated by people with either bots or no lives, and I cannot compete with that.

I'm pretty much like you; I'm a complete gold hoarder. Though, I accumulate a ton of gold, without ever spending it on anything because I'm stingy or don't actually want anything. I honestly do just wander around the market buying for low, selling for high, and AFKing with a shop open half the time, without ever actually playing the "game" itself. It's somewhat addicting really and it really is fascinating how the economy works., Though I don't think I could actually sell a virtual currency for actual cash either. I probably would just move on to auctioning off to sites like eBay if I actually had the funds to do so, really.

I've always been interested in that sort of thing, but the problem is I've never been good at that kind of thing. People tend to keep their tricks to running the auction house pretty hush hush. Also, I guess I never put in the time.

I really enjoy hoarding ingame cash in WoW with my alt army of crafters. It adds an extra element to the game, and also frankly its fun to feel like the money is flowing in.

Sadly real life has yet to emulate this...

It is interesting though to watch and learn the patterns of the AH. People are sometimes predictably irrational, and it's fun to try to notice that and profit from it. Plus, I just need something to do while I wait for my LFR queue to fill.

Yes I love acquiring and saving gold in MMOs. It's something you can't do as easily in real life, which is a shame.
I will sometimes spend nights to check my auctions and wait for the other auction to expire so I could put mine for a higher price.

I've always found it to be a bit tedious and over-complicated dealing with the whole currency, economy and wealth aspect of MMO's. It sort of seems that I rather just go in and charge into slaying things and equipping myself, seeing as much action as possible in my game-time, but hey that's just me, a MMO player who complains about MMO's being complicated.
Meanwhile, a lot of my friends have been like you guys, always scheming up something, messing with the patterns, or telling me about the latest trick and idea to get some sweet, sweet gold. And I would be like "whatever dude, let's kill some stuff!"

I'm pretty sure that I spent more time in WoW watching the Auction House for deals I could make a profit off of, and when I wasn't doing that I was out farming mats to sell as well. That was probably the most important part of the game for me which is kinda sad but thats just how it turned out.

I used to be really into watching the market in WoW. I downloaded Auctioneer2 and had a blast with it! I made tons of gold using the mod!

Same. I always get an inkling to make money via AH, but have never really had the dedication to keep with it, or get really good at it. I believe there are add-ons that can do all the "AH tricks" for you though.
