I'm not much of a hardcore PC gamer, but I do game often. I'm thinking in making Linux Mint my main OS.

How good is the gaming scene for linux?

When I was younger I had Linux Ubuntu installed in my low end desktop computer since it couldn't run any games with Windows operating systems. Gaming experience was far more better with smoother game play since Linux systems require much less system resources than Windows ones. However not all games are compatible with Linux and that's maybe the reason for the low amount of Linux gamers.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Recently, I created a Steam account, it seems to have a good selection of games. We'll see :).

You clearly don't understand how things work judging by your generalized system resources comment. That and the claim that Ubuntu couldn't run any Windows games. I have no trouble running EQ2, Skyrim, World of Warcraft, STO, FFXIV, and the Sims just to name a few under Ubuntu. A few of which I have been running under Ubuntu for the better part of a decade.

@Nytegeek, and for example, how would you go for running windows games in Ubuntu / Mint? I'd personally use Wine, but lately I've run into some issues with some console emulators i tried to run. Maybe I need to play a bit with wine settings to make it work as expected.

Which Ubuntu? Which Linux Mint? You are asking about 2 separate distributions with different versions. The answers would be very different. Also, I didn't run any console games or use any emulation. I was speaking specifically of games for the PC that were meant to run on Windows.

I play on a linux computer, it is ubuntu. I use wine for a windows emulator to run window based programs. I have not had any problems with it. I prefer my linux computer to my windows computer for play games any day.

I'm thinking of getting one as well since it's cheaper than windows CPUs but I also would like to use it for my other programs that I use for work so I'm worried that I might not be able to install some of my programs on it when I finally get one. On the upside they are cheap so I wouldn't be wasting much at least.

Wine isn't an emulator. There is absolutely no emulation going on at all. Wine translates api calls from a Windows app. It is essentially like running a native program.

I gamed on a Linux device for a while, the games I was able to play didn't feel too different from their Windows counterparts, the only thing I was curious to see is driver compatibility but I didn't have any problem with that.

Drivers are a complete and separate issue from running Windows apps on Linux, and Linux uses kernel modules instead of what you would think of as drivers. In this day and age Linux supports the vast majority of hardware people would be using. Hardware compatibility was more of an issue 10, maybe 15 years ago but not so much now.

Oh, that's good to hear. When I booted up Linux everything was set up for me so I thought the OS wasn't able to "read" my hardware but the kernel modules were already installed. Gaming on a Linux machine doesn't feel any different than on Windows. :D

Sorry that is just the word that popped into my mind when I was writing the post, because to me Wine is an emulator, because it works the way I expect windows to work on a Linux even if technically it is more to it then just being an emulator. Sorry next time I'll watch how I word things.

It is mostly fine. There library size is so much bigger than it was a few years ago.

In general, a lot of the games feel less polished on Linux; performance is fine, but you'll often see things like borderless windowed mode missing and other minor things.

With game engines like Unity becoming more popular—engines that have been designed from the ground up with cross platform in mind—I think the consistency issue will go away.

Overall, it is pretty decent on Linux nowadays, and if the game isn't available on Linux, there is a good chance it'll run through Wine.

I don't think the answer would be much different, if even different at all.

They are all Debian based and most things will cross apply between Mint, Ubuntu, and Debian. If you can run Ubuntu PPAs on Debian, I'm sure Mint will be fine.

The only real option for running non-native games is essentially Wine or a Wine wrapper, like "Play on Linux".

Actually it can make a large difference. Debian based does not always mean that various versions of wine will behave in the same way or even work at all with certain games. I am speaking from extensive direct experience using Wine and using Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint.

Sure, sometimes the distro can make a difference, but generally, if you're running the same version of Wine, you'll usually be okay.

I am just saying that your tone with the other individual felt a little unjustified, considering the overwhelming majority of the time, two equal version of Wine on similar distros will produce similar results.

You clearly haven't much experience in the matter. I suggest spending some time looking over appdb test results.
