I'm looking for some new mods to play with a few friends with some sort of RPG element tied in. Anyone got any suggestions?

I've played through Hexxit, which I absolutely loved! I really liked the addition of all the new bosses, dimensions and the tonne of weapons and magic items.

I've heard good thing about Hack/Mine, any one played that at all? I think you get to choose a class and everything to begin with right?

Yeah they have that one mod called "MMORPG" I believe is what it is called. Gives all your tools special level-able abilities and you can level your skills up like Mining and Digging. It is pretty cool and combined with others I am sure it would help a lot in giving you that perfect RPG feel.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Are there servers for this where you can level with your friends or is it only a single player mod?

I haven't really added any mods to my game lately. I just enjoy building in creative or just joining a creative server and build with people there. It's much more fun to share your creations with others, rather than playing alone and keeping it to yourself!

My friend uses a similar mod called mcMMO on its server, I like this mod because it reminds me the skill system of Ultima Online, it adds a bunch of cool active abilities (like chop a whole tree with one click!) and passive abilities (get 'treasures' from digging). You level up your skills when you used them (woodcutting, excavation, mining, acrobatics, etc.), the highest your skills, the better your abilities are! You can also create a party to share experience and loot.

Would you recommend Hexxit then? I myself have also been looking for some good mods, so would you say this is a good one to pick up?

Definitely Livvy, it's so much fun. We're still playing about on it at the moment. I can't begin to tell you how much fun it is, it changes the game so much.

We've been trying to mine and craft as little as possible so we can just concentrate on the adventuring side of it. At the moment we've been venturing in to a dimension called the Twilight Forest that has some incredible boss mobs in it!

I'm curious as to why the thread is in the "RPG" section. Is Minecraft itself considered an RPG these days? Also, those mods are not made by the devs, right? I always wondered where they got things like swords and bows into the game, because I don't remember MC having them in the beginning. Did they get the ideas from 3D Dot Heroes?

The friend who gifted me a Minecraft license plays on a RPG-style server called Herocraft so I began there as my first Minecraft experience. I didn't get very far, but the server seems very popular and offers fairly extensive character customization. I know they've incorporated a custom class system with perks to crafting, plus custom magic spells and so forth. There are some epic fantasy builds on that server as well -- check it out!
