This is a question I have always asked myself when I see a MMORPG. I think that some are over hyped to some degree. Then you have some that you get excited for but end up getting bored with it after a while.

Do you think that most MMORPGs are over hyped?

I think it's only natural, people get bored with MMOs they play and look for newer things with much higher expectations as genre matures.

Seriously can't think of a single big MMORPG that wasn't overhyped in some way before, they ALL were!

To some degree, yes. It's quite ridiculous seeing how much conversation future games, such as ESO, are already creating.

Some are way too over hyped.
Take TOR for example. People said that it was going to be the WoW killer, that the quests would be amazing, etc. and then when the game came out it was a massive letdown and now it's F2P.
I'm kinda expecting the same for ESO.

They definitely are over hyped. You watch the videos and think, wow this is so cool?! I don't have a game like this, let's get it!.... 4 hours later, 'oh, this is exactly the same as the rest of them'...

I actually find the best games are those which aren't that popular and aren't over hyped, or even over advertised. And those that are, well, they don't live up to expectations sometimes.

Well I usually don't go around listening to the buzz an MMORPG creates and only read some reviews on game sites and I won't say that it is an issue with the entire genre. I mean nowadays most new games end up being overhyped. Its not an MMORPG specific thing.

Well this is exactly why you shouldn't put too much emphasis on what others say. Check some of the videos while keeping in mind that it's promotional material, try to play the beta and that's it. Then you can make your own opinion.

They have to be over-hyped. The developers are taking a major risk in creating these huge games.

I watched a video interview of Elder Scrolls Online not too long ago. They were talking about the subscription fees, and the other costs that the gamer would need to play. However, I believe that the developer understood that there was a huge risk involved with creating an MMORPG. One way to overcome this, is to advertise like crazy. It only makes sense that the developers was the game to succeed. Not every MMORPG can be World of Warcraft after all.

I don't think you always get bored after a few hours. But I know where you are coming from. MMORPGs are an investment, and the developers need to find a way to market their games better.

I myself don't listen to the hype. If the game is actually fun and enjoyable then I will just play it without the need of the hype of it. What games do you think are overhype? I think most things are overhyped anyway

I actually find that the best games are the ones that aren't hype too. The hype is what ruins most games because you expect more and receive less. That is why I tend to go with the games that aren't hyped nowadays.

You keep you expectations at a minimum and you won't be disappointed.

I think so the biggest title that comes to mind is WoW, but then again this is a subjective topic so everybody's opinion might be different.
