Are mmorpg's too similar?

I ask this because at times it feels like these games blend in with each other and times I forget what I'm playing. Who knows, that may be a medical condition on my part, but does anyone feel the same way? I can totally see all of these free-to-play games looking and feeling similar, but not the big time games. What would you say about this?

It's a tough line here. I think the games all blend with eachother just because of the genre. They kind of have to, they appeal to the same audience. That being said, the creators could do things to make the games different though

I think there's some definite games that stand out from the rest and give a different experience, but with many other's it's easy to get them mixed up. I'm forgetting specifics, but I used to play 3 games where I would constantly forget which one of the 3 that I was playing.

For me, I think MMORPG's are only similar in that by the very definition of MMORPG, they have to all be a massively multiplayer online role playing game. I have played several over the years and find that the ones that are free, do offer an okay experience, but the ones that you have to subscribe to to purchase a membership are much better.

We also have to remember, that the free games are free for a reason. The tradeoff compared to other paid games is notable.

I find that it is better to focus on only playing 1 or 2 of these games and get really good at them and conquer their worlds. When a person starts playing 2-8 games at a time, it causes a person to loose interest and things do begin to feel the same. This is only multiplied when the game is a free version. It's like when you play monopoly, and begin to destroy all your competition. You know the in's and out's of your particular game and are easily able to explore, defeat foes and become a leader in the field.

I think there's quite a gap on the MMORPG market that needs to be filled quickly, let's hope the elder scrolls online makes up to it's single player series, all the MMOs out there are trying to be WOW like, and that's not good for them because many folks that left wow for age of conan, star wars, lord of the rings, etc, all had something in common, the fact that all of them came back 2months after quitting in the first place, game producers need to invent something from zero and use all the information on all MMOs that are already released to make an ultimate MMO game, every game has it's flaws but if you add all the good components from different games into one, I'm pretty sure the result will be quite good, let's hope for Elder Scrolls to maybe change the actual MMO market.

Heh, I agree with you! It looks like all the MMOs out there are trying to be like WOW, some of them have managed to become an almost exact copy of that game. Which is sad, because this market needs way more diversity! It's like all those games are looking to have the success this game had by copying it, instead of implementing new ideas. I really hope Elder Scrolls will be a good addition to this market. I guess we'll find out very soon!

I owuldn't say that all MOORPG s are simliar since they clearly are not similar, but at the same time, I wouldn't deny the fact that some MMORPGs do look similar indeed. Not because they take place in same fantasy world, but because of the same 'kill 6 wolves and bring the pelt to the owner' type quests that are so prevalent in MMORPG games.

You are not the only one who feel like that.

MMORPG's, FPS's will always look and have similar gameplay. You can't make anything unique out of it because there will always be leveling up, killing monsters, and getting better loot. They could add in all the unique skills, monsters, and classes they want, but MMORPG's will always be considered the same by me. There is just nothing that is so unique and spectacular about it compared to action games where there are different storylines and different gameplay.

There are obviously similarities but quite a few games have a completely different feel to them. It's harder on multiplayer games though since the story line is usually a lot more thin than in single player ones.

I agree with you most of the MMORPGs are very similar in a way but I believe all got their own strong points and fun in their way. I do know some MMORPG which is more unique than the others like Atlantica Online. It is a tactic-based online game.

Some MMORPG's are too similar. For example, the scenery can all be the same or similar. Like most are fields and forests. Also when you craft items, that can seem like you are doing exactly the same things on many different games.

Well, yes. I do think most of the MMOs out there are pretty similar to each other. However there are still a few which have a style of their own and no other like them exist...that is until some other company launches a clone of it.

It's bound to happen though, as there is not much that can be done to change the games in MMOs unless you really revolutionize.

I'll make the statement that there all exactly the same. I feel especially in the F2P world half of the games use the same game engines and graphic engines. I don't need a different genre or a total shock but give me a new game, implement a new combat system, or streamline role playing and guild content.

I definitely think that WoW has set a standard that other games are trying to copy. They've been successful for a reason, and a lot of smaller/newer MMOs (especially F2P) have jumped through a lot of hoops to try and copy exactly what WoW's been doing. To me, a great MMO is something that stands out from the crowd and tries something different. There's not too many of those these days, I find, and the market is pretty over saturated with similar games.

MMORPGs are starting to break out and evolve into different styles gameplay wise. But I definitely think there are to many games that are acting in the World of Warcraft style. After a while many people want to try something completly different, but MMORPGs are having trouble finding what that "something different" is. They definitely need to evolve because people are getting tired of that same old World of Warcraft styles thing we've had going on.

There is so many out there now that it's impossible for some of them not to be similar. Each game tries to be unique but it's hard without leaving the genre of MMORPG, and the only thing that differs the most in games now is level design.

I think nearly every single MMO is exactly the same, the names are just changed and it's really hard to find a good MMO that differs from the rest. Think about it, the level cap is always the same (100+), classes are the same (mage ,range, melee and healer) and upgrade system is always the same with imbuing weps and armour with gems etc. Even the quests take the same form! I would like to see an MMO that is really different for once.

I think so that's the reason why I kind of gave up on MMO's, but I can't blame developers for doing it I remember seeing something on TV where people that make MMO games tend to make more money so unless people stop playing them it wont change.

Usually it's the free to play mmo's that are trying to imitate this big names, they fail though and this is why they all look similar. The big names are all different in a good way. Even though the concept is really similar between MMO's they always manage to differentiate them in good ways

Games have been out for so long and release all the time that there's bound to be an overlap of ideas. We are human, after all, so it's natural to have similar ideas with other people whether it be from copying or totally by coincidence. Most MMO's are similar because they follow the successful ones that have been proven to work. I guess that's why you see a lot of similar MMO's nowadays. We also have to remember that developers are trying to find the best way to earn money while trying to spend the least amount of time doing so. Having ideas already set up for you by other people is a godsend for them, so it doesn't really matter that much to the developers as long as they can earn something out of the game after release.
