Are Snow elves and Falmer the same race?

I never really understood this are they a completely different species or are they a mutation of the Snow Elves from what I have played out of Skyrim they never really explain either group.

From what I understood, yes, they are, they've suffered mutations from living underground... That's one ugly race :))

Yes, or at least they are what is left of the ancestors of the Snow Elves. They are speculated to be one of the original elven races but eras of degeneration have turned them into the crude cave dwellers they are now.

According to legend they were driven underground by ancient Nords after being declared banished from Skyrim forever. They encountered the Dwemer (dwarves) there who forced them to eat poisonous fungus which made them blind and weak so they could be enslaved. The Falmer eventually tried to revolt against them and used even deeper, darker caverns as their home since they could navigate them better with their heightened and adapted senses. The Dwemer all vanished in the midst of the Falmer uprising due to their tinkering with the Aedric artifact the Heart of Lorkhan, leaving their cities and halls completely empty for the Falmer to occupy, who had at that point become too sensitive to sunlight for them to venture out of the caverns. This trapped them underground and led to their de-evolution.

In other words they are all Golum from Lord of the Rings.

Then a Dragonborn came by a thousand years later and killed them all.

    The End.

Now that makes me sad, I feel bad for killing them... Oh well, a Dragonborn's gotta' do what a Dragonborn's gotta' do. I will let 2-3 alive so they can mate and have babies and refill the population of Falmer :D

I love the lore related to the Falmer. It's not that original but there is just something about it... I'd really love to see some snow elves in a future Elder Scrolls game!

Since they only existed prior to the Nords occupying Skyrim and kicking them out (which was a looooong time ago), that game would have to be a super-prequel to all of the other TES games.

Still, there are two notable snow elves still alive in Skyrim (in the dawnguard expansion).

They're alive only because they were turned into vampires a long time ago.

Yes, snow elves fell, and were enslaved by dwarves, then hundreds of years of living underground and feeding on the poisonous glowing mushrooms turned them into flamer

I wish their was a mod that let you played as a Falmer that would be cool in my opinion I hate fighting them on legendary mode they can kill you fast if you don't have the right gear that poison hurts.

Yes they are. Snow Elves lived above the ground while Falmer lived below ground and mutated into the vile falmer they are now. Easy to kill though, so that's nice.

I really loved the snow elves and the lore behind them is amazing. It's just a shame they didn't have there own extensive quest line, that wouldn't been amazing.

I had wondered the exact same thing when I first started completing the Falmer missions in skyrim. I remember doing some quests where some dialogue kind of hinted they were the same thing. Later on through out the missions I found out that sure enough they are the same race.

You can actually meet a real, live Snow Elf in the Dawnguard dlc, who has not been turned into a Falmer. You can see how they actually looked like. He gives you one of best bows in the game if you complete his quest line.

I actually caught the loading screen that explains this yesterday. The falmer are indeed snow elves that lived underground and were blinded because they didn't need eyes in the dark. They have an excellent way of sensing you though.
