Are WOW's days numbered?

With World of Warcraft subscription numbers dropping like a led brick I think the end is inevitable. Their only hope is to switch to a free-to-play model, updates like Pandoria are just not going to cut it for a pay-to-play game.

While I definitely agree that the number of players will drop significantly, but I highly doubt it will die altogether. There's ten years of lore to back it up, not to mention one of the best balanced mechanics of any MMORPG so far.

I wonder what is going to happen to the movie that is coming to production next year with the huge loss in number of players. LOL

I think the Rift f2p is a threat to wow now and you can see more gamers dropping this game out

I don't think they have to resort to making it free to be honest. They could maybe slash the price down a bit though and that might stop the drop in subscriptions.

Well when WOW first came out there weren't too many dominant MMORPG's. Now there are loads to choose from, and a lot of gamers will choose MMORG's like Rift etc... over WOW. The competition is fierce now, and Blizzard need to think of innovative ways to keep their customers and attract new ones.

I think WOW arguably still offers more than other MMORPG's currently out, and most recent MMORPG's based their gameplay around Runescape and WOW. I think if Blizzard want to attract more customers, they should give them more and cut the pricing which is steep for some.

It's all down to choice and as mentioned above, the competition from other MMO games has increased. Either drop the costs of playing or invest in better game upgrades is the way to go. Whatever happens, WoW doesn't have the monopoly it used to have.

I don't think it will die altogether. The subscriber numbers are still way too high for them to kill it off. Just wait for some updates and new installments, they will go up

I think although it is still updated all the time they should take the price down by $3 or so. I guarantee you it would increase subscribers and they make $75,000,000+ easy from WOW every month anyway.

I think they still can do some tweaks to the game to prevent the reduction on the number of gamers dropping out

I agree that WoW is still far too profitable for them to be worrying just yet or thinking about going free to play. They are merging some of the lower population realms and I think that will help. I know my server is pretty dead personally.

It's so hard to say. On one side you can see that WoW is looking old, and you still have to pay. On the hand they keep releasing content, and people have put so many hours into it why would they leave? I mean they have paid £100's over the years, so why throw that away? It's kind of like going to a casino, you start paying and because you've paid so much you feel like you can't quit.

I think WoWs days are number, everyone who was addicted to it is getting older and don't have the time to sink into it anymore. I know me and all my friends quit like 4 or 5 years ago and pick up a new game to try it out. It will eventually get phased out by a new game that will get a bunch of kids addicted to it for 10 years just like how WoW happened. Its like how WoW killed everquest, eventually something will kill WoW. No matter what it was great while it lasted.

WoW needs to be able to attract a new audience, the old audience is getting older and loosing interest in the game they used to love. I feel that with the level cap increasing, it makes it harder for new players that may not have access to BOA or have the time to dedicate to leveling. If there isn't a way to overcome this, then yes WoW may die.

I think eventually they will change to f2p, which to me makes sense because when I played WoW it didn't seem any better than other f2p's I have played, and in fact it was worse than some. It's a good game, but is it really that good? I think it was subscription at first because it was one of the earliest and best RPG's, but now it is being overtaken because there are RPG's everywhere! But I don't think people will stop ever playing it completely, maybe the fan base will just drop a bit.

They will be fine. A couple more paid content packages and then at some point they will switch to developing WOW2.

Yes eventually it's going to die like other MMORPGs. It's bleeding subscribers right now, but it's still more than 9 million! It will take at least a couple more years before WoW either dies or goes F2P.

Exactly. Even if they will slowly bleed out... well they have the numbers to support themselves for quite a few years to come.
