I have frequently read stories about how easily it is to get hooked to WoW. I wonder how many players here cannot pass each day without putting a few hours in the game? Do you feel that this game has negatively affected your social life, work performance etc.?

It used to. I honestly haven't touched wow since around the end of cataclysm and beginning of MOP, so a while, but at one point in my life unless I was busy I would play for 10 and even more hours and it started taking a toll in my life. I've been avoiding MMO's since then resort to less addictive genres which are session-based like MOBAS and shooters.

Not really, maybe in BC or Wotlk, it would have been something close to addiction in that I enjoyed my time so much that it was a normal part of my week. But I was easily able to quit in the middle of Cata, and again in MoP, and now in WoD, I am completely finished, having only played the expansion a few months. It is very doubtful I will buy the next expansion.

Not anymore. I quit for a loooooooong time when MoP came out. Did some casual stuff in WoD for a couple months when it came out then quit, haven't touched it since. I was a functional addict even at the height of my playing and still am to a degree with other things.

No, I never have been, but I can tell the addiction is real. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as addicted to a game as this one kid from my high school. We were buddies when we first met, but soon he started playing and just disappeared. We wouldn't see him for weeks at a time, he kept making up some sickness or whatever and his mom actually took him to a rehab clinic. I have graduated by that point and moved on to college, but I'm told he only remained few months before playing before going back. This was years ago though so I think he might not be that into it anymore.

No, and I don't think you can be. People abuse the word "addiction" far to often for my taste. Show me MRI scans of the brain in a person compulsively playing WoW to much that indicate an addictive response and I'll believe it. Until then it is just a compulsive behavior or bad habit and should be treated as such. Addiction is a real medical problem and people calling things that aren't addictions addictions only serve to denigrate the issue.

Not anymore since when I was younger I played it hours in a row but nowadays I don't feel WoW being so entertaining. Therefore I have abandoned it and play different games.

Not really. Even when I was playing WoW a lot I wasn't addicted, I played a couple of hours/day for fun. I'm burnt out right now, haven't played in a long time.

Used to be. Summers in high school were almost none existent to me because the only thing that mattered was World of Warcraft. It didn't help that my entire friend group was addicted as well. Many restless nights and energy drinks went into crafting my childhood. I play a couple months out of the year now, and it's getting to be that time..

Yes and no. I also feel like the "addiction" connotation gets used a LOT. However, I do know many people who did/do dedicate a large number of hours in their day to WoW. There is always that "hahaha, wear diapers and you don't have the bio breaks" joke.....but I did know a guy who actually would do that for raids. He was on for hours before I ever got on in the morning (prime time to knock out dailies), and he'd be on until well after midnight. No breaks. I don't know if he even worked outside the house because he was always on.

I would not say I was "addicted." I was able to give up the game fairly easily, due to real life necessity. Do I want to play again? Sure, but it isn't the end of the world if I can't. I call mine a habit, much like a smoker taking a smoke break. They know when it's time to go take a smoke break. I knew when it was "time" to go log in, and then when it was time to get off. If I had something else to do during my normal WoW period, I would go do it. No problem.

Definitely not, I like playing wow a lot but I also like doing other things, so, I balance it all very good to make time for everything. Also, playing too much isn't good for you.

I think most of WoW`s addiction comes from the guilds you are in. If you are a member of hardcore raiding guild, there is no way you can pass on specific raids they want to do. And then, you start cancelling dates and meeting your friends because you have to raid that night.

I already said it, but I'll say it again. Contrary to popular belief video game addiction is not real. You can't be addicted to WoW. If you play 24/7 and wear a diaper you are certainly stupid, but not addicted.

I never got addicted to this game because I'm not that interested in this type of theme in any game but I did play it a little and can appreciate it and I can see how people can get addicted to playing it. I have a few friends who got super into it but thankfully none got too obsessed that they stopped hanging out with us or anything extreme like that.

You can't get addicted to it to begin with. That isn't how addiction works.

Yeah, but addiction is a chemical dependency and people can become addicted to the chemicals released in their own bodies. There have already been studies done on chemical addictions caused by chatting and cell phone use. The addiction is a physical and chemical thing, not just ´i want´.

Yes, and a number of studies have disproved things as addictions as well. The chemical responses you refer to don't just happen for everything that people do repeatedly even if done to extreme levels. For example, sexual addiction has been clearly disproved. There are very specific circumstances needed to create the responses you are talking about. My point is that addiction is a medical condition with a clear clinical definition and set of parameters. A lot of really bad habits do not qualify as addictions because the chemical reactions are just not present. People seem to use a more colloquial and inaccurate definition for addiction and are under the mistaken assumption that anything can be addictive.

I definitely wouldn't say I'm addicted to WOW but I use to play it a couple hours a day. Honestly, I rarely touch it now but I wouldn't mind getting back into it. It is kind of hard for me to be addicted to video games because I get bored easily.

I don't think I was ever addicted to WOW. Addiction is a strong terminology to describe a game lover. Addiction is misused a lot and usually it is severe and needs treatment. Playing a game nonstop does not qualify as addiction. However, I did play WOW a lot but I was able to stop for long periods of time.

Yes, it's not as much addictive to any other games out there. It's just a normal game and I don't think that I am addicted to it.
