I've been pondering over the visions that Artyom was given through the Baby Dark One, as I've been watching them as I found them in the files of the game. (Unfortunately, they don't contain any sound for some reason). I am a little puzzled over the third vision Artyom gets, as you first see Artyom standing beside the Dark One, looking out at the botanical gardens, and in the next flash, the Dark One has been replaced by the mother and Artyom has been replaced by the Artyom from before the war, and they're looking out at the botanical gardens from before the war.

Now, I've heard that (Book spoilers ahead)
Artyom's mother is killed and eaten by rats
but is this vision applying that The Dark One that saved Artyom in the Botanical gardens, is actually his own mother?

If this is true, I find the next flash in the vision very strange, because in the next flash, The Dark One turns into Artyom, and Artyom turns into the Baby Dark One. I know these might just be comparisms, but I'm pretty sure that they are trying to say something more that we'll have to read between the lines to understand. But I just can't get my mind around it.. :p

I dont think they are trying to say that the dark one (botanical gardens) IS his mother..
As I understood it they are just trying to show that the humans and the dark ones are "equal/shouldn't be enemies"

    Kid Artyom (vulnerable) Mother (protector)

    Humans destroy themself, Mother dies

Kid Artyom (vulnerable) Botanical Dark One (takes mothers place, protector)

    Humans destroy dark ones

Artyom (now protector) The Little One (vulnerable)

I don't know if that gave any sense..It's like Artyom knows that what humans did was wrong and he is now trying to make it good again by takin the little one under his wing.... I can't really explain it in english XD It's a headfuck :D

The little Dark One is using the analogy as brynje describes. Furthermore (spoiler)...

...you can overhear a conversation in the Reich level between two soldiers. One of them sold the Dark One on to a merchant after he/she was captured along with Artyom, because it somehow reminded him of his own child. If you consider the fact that these men will kill non-Slavic humans with no regrets, or will class humans with certain skull measurements as mutants and then execute them; then its not far-fetched to consider that the Dark One had to have been manipulating that soldier's mind in order to make him take pity on an actual mutant.

I thought the dark one was channeling her ghost or something, maybe that's just me.

I've been thinking something along the lines of what Brynje said, I just couldn't put it straight out like he did. Thanks, that's very well said! :D

Didn't the little Dark One said that Artyom was adopted long ago? So i'm assuming that it's just her appearance (or as much as Artyom remembers about his mother's appearance) in his visions and it's actually a Dark One.

Artyom's mother is a Dark One? That vision just shows you what happens in the book series. :p
In "The Gospel According to Artyom", the original book version - not the comic, Artyom recalls that the Dark One who saved him (when he ventured onto the surface as a child) took the shape of his mother. But this is how Artyom interpreted it: "And then it seemed to me, that he is not repainting her face, putting on a mask of her to cheer me up, but... somehow lets in her lost being, allows her to materialize within himself for a few seconds - for one brief seeing with her son. This is how a medium admits ghosts to itself." Sorry for the dodgy wording, since I have my version in Polish and I had to translate it to English.

I just assumed it was the Dark One's way of communicating with Artyom that everything was going to be okay, and that the Dark One would protect him for a time, just like a mother would have. That's all I got from it when I saw it those two times.

Might just show the order of protection. His mother protecting him. The dark one protecting him and now him protecting the dark one.
