Been away from WoW since Wrath of the Lich King. Is it still as good?

I've been thinking of coming back since I quit because of what I heard about Cataclysm and what it would do to the game. Is the game still has fantastic and time consuming as ever? Or has it be destroyed

It really depends on what you enjoy doing. The good news for you is that you can come back and get all the expansions except for WoD for free. They are all part of the ´vanilla´ box now. So if you enjoy leveling your character, you basically have 3 expansions to level through.

For me, the game has lost it´s fun, but this is mainly an endgame thing. Everything is so gated and controlled now, that it makes everything feel like a chore. In order to keep up, you need to log in most days and do the same things, and then another set of things that you have to do each week. None of them are fun an exciting, which makes them just a checklist of chores that need to be done.

Having joined during Cataclysm, I can sincerely say that it's a matter of preference. Some people like it the way it is now (read: simplified, casualised, more functional). There have definitely been some upgrades over Wrath of the Lich King, such as new HD player models, which truly make the World (of Warcraft) prettier.

Then again, some hate it now. That's mostly the folks who played in Vanilla or during the Burning Crusade, as they feel it's TOO simple now.

By the way, your account should be upgraded to Mists of Pandaria now, and you should have a free 10-day Warlords of Draenor trial up for grabs in your account. Try activating that and see if WoW is still your cup of tea. :)

It's definitely changed in good and bad ways. Like Azrile and GlacialDoom said, it's really a matter of preference now whether you'll like or dislike the game now. Things are a lot more straightforward when it comes to endgame dailies and obtaining gear from them, but there are a lot of cool new things like Battle Pets, adding new ways to spend time in the game or make some gold off of what other people are interested. You should definitely try it out, see if you enjoy it the way it is now. The overall simplicity makes it more accessible to more people, but also a bit boring if you're interested in more complex stuff. It could go either way, so see how it is for you.

Yeah, it's still alright. You played back before they had the Looking for Raid system which I personally like. It lets you gear up a little bit so when you do the real raids with people you are not sitting there feeling like a scrub, and no one will mention your gear. It's still a solid game, kind of casual now though.

The game has lost some of its edge, but that's mostly due to age and trying to cater to more casual users. Still, you can find a few hours of enjoyment from a gaming session on a regular basis.

It depends on your preference.. whether you prefer raiding, pvping, questing, etc. I'd say it's still worth playing although it may not be as good for nostalgic reasons. WoD is recent and I think it's worth coming back. Normal players all have the expansons besides WoD so there's still a lot of new content.

I was thinking this as well. I am not hardcore, nor an elitest.. but they have made almost everything so easy to do that there is no challenge. What this means is most of your gametime is just logging in and doing very trivial things... chores.

For me, you need to wipe every once in awhile in dungeons, you need to fail things on occassions in order to feel any sense of accomplishment. Right now, everything you accomplish is a given before you even start.

Yup, I agree to this. If you really want to come back there are a lot of things to do, but don't expect the game to have the same feeling as it had before.

The lore kind of died with the Lich King at the end of Wrath. That said, it is still playable. It is easy to get bored though with the rapid progression and end gamer content that turns into a grind pretty quickly.

Good is relative. A lot of people hate the game, which is funny to me. It's like hating a tool that was once useful for you, but you hate it because you failed in controlling yourself. ^_^

Anyway, I uninstalled WoW for the first time in ten years back in April this year. I told my wife that I need to move on, after such a long time dealing with broken PvP, which is my thing in WoW. However, my wife recently got back into it and somehow now I am reinstalling the game. 30 GB remaining.

WoW will always be the #1 MMO in my books, regardless of whether I play it or not. Not everyone like Warlords of Draenor. They felt entitled to having flying right off the bat because they can't be bothered to spend an extra few minutes to fly there with a flight path. Content-wise, very nice. I liked that it took effort to get places and do things. Negatively, people can still get epic gear very easily just by crafting or running a few dungeons. In the end, it's my go-to-MMO-game.

It is the curse of being successful. You can´t change things radically because you risk losing a big chunk of your subscribers, so instead you just let the game gradually become stale because there is not much else you can do. I don´t think many people will say that WOW sucks, but what they will say is that it is just the exact same thing we have been playing since WOTLK. WOTLK is the expansion where the majority of players were able to actually see raids and were able to run heroic dungeons with ease.

As others have said, it depends. Many will say that no, it is not as good. However, you really won't know unless you try. I personally still enjoy it. Do I love it as much as I did in WOTLK? No. Not even close. But is it still worth playing? To me? Yes. Give the addiction another try!
