In the final movie, we see Frodo sail off into the sea at the end.

He is leaving Middle Earth. But to where? This is something I have never understood, and is more or less unanswered as far as I know.

I've not read the books too heavily, but I think Tolkien and the producers wanted that to be a mystery of some sort, that they were going into the unknown to see other places. It would have been nice to see where they were set to was though.

He sails with the elves so I reckon he goes to the undying lands (or Valinor). It's a great end as it just leaves enough of a chance for a sequel (Immortal Frodo or something like that :) )

It would be interesting to see an expansion pack one day that concentrates on Frodos journey at the end of LOTR. Would take someone with a big imagination but being able to game outside of the normal mapping zone would be interesting!

His sword wound has to a certain degree infected him with Saurons evil so to get rid of it he has to take it with him and leave middle earth and go to the undying lands forever. It means he rids the world of the last vestige of Saurons power.

He is heading for Valinor, a land where you live forever in happiness. I think Tolkien wanted somewhat of a cliffhanger here in case he wanted to add more. Genius.

He sailed to Valinor, the Undying Lands of the Valar. I think the message here is the transition into immortality for our heroes, after their quest was done.
