Amroth swam from his boat towards the shore, and the implication is that he drowned. Turgon's wife also drowned while crossing the Helcaraxë.

I figure Elves are represented as having a fairly light touch on the world, but they are still physical beings, and basically act like it most of the time. (Tolkien from time to time implies that the 'fading' the Elves might continue in a fairly literal way, and especially in his earlier writings has Elves that, over the centuries, have been reduced to practically to intangibility in the modern world. But even if in his later writings Tolkien thought that might still be their ultimate fate, things hadn't progressed anywhere near that far by the War of the Ring

It's implied that elfs are very graceful, cunning and quiet in the books/movies but I really doubt they can walk on water. If this was the case then the battles that were fought would be a lot different.

Elves have no fear of the water and it is part of their intrinsic being but actually walking on it? No. As pinring says, they have a special 'oneness' with the world and it's environment (such as trees, water, light etc etc) rather than any power of dominance over it.
