I just finished Chrono Trigger, my first RPG game completed and it was very engaging. My hardware isn't that great so I can't play any new games atm. I'm about half-way through FF6 and also have FF7 on a playstation emulator but visually looks quite terrible to today's standards. What classic RPGs do you recommend?
If you can play FF7 on your emulator, I'm sure you could also get Xenogears to work. It's also an RPG made by Square but it has a better story (way better), better character development, and better gameplay. The graphics are vibrant and colorful and is in full 3D. Believe me, you'll love this RPG.
If you have a ps3 you can grab a large part of the FF sagas remastered for the PS3 or just emulate them if you want, FF IX is said to be one of the best rpg's ever made so, some people find it quite fun to play old games like that, personally I can't play games that old, but I'm definitely going to buy the FFX HD once it comes out in the ps3 store.
FF series, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, Super Mario RPG, Suikoden are some of my favorite classic RPG's. Chrono Trigger also belongs on that list. I rate all of these games as solid 8-10's on a scale of one to ten.
I would have to say the KH series since you can run FF 7 on an emulator you can run KH it runs smoother then FF and is almost like running it on the PS2 sometimes the audio skips, but it is not bad.
I'll second the Xenogears suggestion. It's the only game I always have available in plain view, I've played it countless times. Amazing story, graphics for it's time, and music.
Uh, Kingdom Hearts for the PS 2 would be a lot harder to emulate as compared to FF7. You would need a more powerful computer to be able to run KH smoothly. But if you're talking about KH for the Gameboy Advance, that would be a piece of cake to emulate.
The classic games are just too simple for me, the newer games set some standards. A link to the past is surely worth a try though. And I recommend Faxandu on th NES.
When you talk about classic RPGs, Deus Ex comes to mind. Oh what a game they made back in those days, it laid a platform for all the modern shooter RPGs that are out there in the market today. Deus Ex rocks!!!
Chrono Trigger! It's so nice to see that someone gave that game a mention. I had honestly forgotten all about it until I read this post. I loved playing that game. What an amazing story line and game play that game was, literally! My all time favorite RPG though is, Secret of Mana which came out for Super Nintendo. It was such an addictive game. I regret selling it when I was a kid. I'd play it all over again if I still had it today. The whole game play was exciting. Who cares if the graphics weren't the best, it is a Super Nintendo game. So they wouldn't be! But that doesn't matter. It was the actual GAME that rocks!
If we are going to talk about classic RPGs, you should try playing the games from the Dragon Quest series. And since most of the suggestions are turn-based RPG, allow me to do the honor of introducing you to the world of tactical RPG. Try playing Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force and Utawarerumono (caution: this game contains some adult scenes but great gameplay and story nonetheless). Once you get the hang of it, you'll keep asking for more from this genre.
The best games are Phantasy Star IV and the Breath of Fire series, with honorable mention to Kingdom Hearts.
Ahh yes, that game was unbelievable compared to the others at its time! It was truly THE RPG FPS game. You could try some of the older elder scrolls games too, most of them are really good.
Deus EX would be what comes to mind. I loved it. It was one of the few FPS games I liked.I spent a lot of hours with that game.
Some people say it was kind of a let down after the first one, but you might like Chrono Trigger's sequel: Chrono Cross. Also I would recommend any of the Gen I or II Pokemon games.
