I played WoW 2 years ago for a whole year, every single day. I was basically addicted :)
I played as a Night Elf Druid and loved it. However, work got in the way, and I stopped playing WoW.
I haven't heard much of WoW in the past year, and was wondering if it is worth coming back to WoW (I have more time now and I'm feeling nostalgic). How active is the WoW community compared to 2 years ago?

Well right about now might not be the best option for you because you will have hard time getting into a proper raiding guild due to the fact that you don't have gear and won't have the chance to get it and PvP pretty much sucks. However the new PvP season will be starting this or next week, so if you are in PvP then go for it.
If it was me I would start now and farm achievements, gold maybe do PvP and prepare for the expansion. That's when the real "playing" will start :)

I haven't really looked into the upcoming expansion. It looks great though, I like it that they're 'upgrading' the characters, more polycount, better textures and new animations. It's been a while, so I'll probably won't jump straight into PvP, I will need to rediscover the game again :)

For the 8 years of on and off WoW subscriptions, I would say that you won't have a problem getting into a guild you enjoy while having fun with the game. Regardless of what a lot of elitists and former addicts say, it really comes down to balance and dynamics. WoW will always be one of my favorite games, even though I have grown bored of it. I still play it because my wife plays it and I don't mind doing some work procrastination at times as well.

It's not a Guild Wars 2 sort of visual beauty, but it has its charm. The world is lush and detailed, even if the polygon count is lower than many MMO games right now. It's such a massive game with so much to do, that it would be a waste not to give it another go.

Blizzard will be releasing Expansion 5 later this year and already has Expansion 6 in development. Even within context of wealth, $15/month really isn't a lot. It's less than a club sandwich and a pint of beer or fruit drink if you prefer at a top notch restaurant.

I feel that the players who still play are more friendly and more helpful. It seems like almost everyone has done everything once and are now just playing to have fun. I really like it more now than before.

If it's a casual guild yeah. Gearing up to start raiding normla SoO doesn't take even 2 weeks now, however if his aim is to do end game it will be close to impossible for few reasons.
First noone will consider any player without legendary cloak and that alone takes at least 2 months to get it. Also for example my guild doesn't consider players with less than 8/14 HC experience(and that's being generous) and at least 569-570 ilvl. It's not that we have problem with lower ilvl players, but truth is most end game guilds can't afford or don't feel like clearing every week for new members to gear up.

Still apart from raiding there are also challenge modes and proving grounds with nice titles and rewards. What's more the rewards/titles will be unobtainable once the expansion comes out, so it's definitely worth getting them on all your characters while you can.
