I'm an avid MMO gamer but my experience has been concentrated only on Guild Wars 1/2 and Lord of the Rings Online. GW2 is a buy-once, subscription free game that is more focused on skill- and gear-based game progression while LoTRO is a freemium/subscription-based MMO heavy on lore, emphasizes massive content, and focuses on player immersion.

Given my experience in MMOs, what do you think would make me buy WoW? What would make me hate it? Your comments and opinions are very welcome. :)

To be honest I don't think anyone should start playing WoW at the moment. Those who have been playing for ages, yes I understand them going on.

But for a new player to choose WoW over all the other possibilities... makes very little sense.

Really, why is that? The reason why I asked this is because of my experiences with LotRO. I started out playing this game on F2P but moved on to VIP subscription simply because I liked the game a lot. Most people have said that LotRO has aged beautifully and I wholeheartedly agree. In these days where technical marvels such as Guild Wars 2 run popular, LotRO still has a keen edge to it that could still draw new players.

Does this mean that WoW really is not that good anymore?

Here is the thing, if you want to start playing wow now. You are looking at the game + 4 expansions. And then you obviously still have the subscription fee. All of that to play a game that is 10 years old?

Not saying it's good, I'm just saying that there are probably better alternatives out there.

Just buy a cd-key online for the battle chest or vanilla. You'll get some free game time to try it out and if you like it then you can one-by-one buy the expansions as you level up to each cap. If you don't like it you've only lost a few dollars.

I would say there is still a reason to buy WoW if you have never played. Sure some of the old jokes have changed and the barrens chat is better, but the game is still full of lore and stories to be discovered, especially for a first time player. As in any MMO if you take your time, play how you want, and pay attention to the quests the game can be really beautiful. There are stories going on with almost every named NPC, you just have to find them. Not only that but if you are anything like me and like to collect things, think of a new player just starting....all those pets and mounts that they wont have! It would be awesome! At this stage in the game you could even revisit the old raids and see the lore there without even needing a friend. I just ran black temple for the first time ever a few months ago, just for the lore and fun. I played in BC but never got there, and now I can finally see it. There are all kinds of reasons to still play WoW. Find a populated server and give the free first 20 levels a try and go from there.

Blizzard know how to make fun and engaging content, WoW is basically a distillation of all the fun you can get in an MMO. It's the genre at it's height of perfection, and it's also a game that's constantly updated and given love by the people that made it.

Don't waste the time or money. It's almost over and you have missed too much for it to still be worth it. Should have got on board back in Vanilla ;)

Almost over? Just like people who said WoW is dying in 2008? Well it's 2014. The game has been around for almost ten years and it's still receiving periodic updates and expansions every 2-ish years. It still has over 7 million players globally. Every time an expansion comes out, that number peaks at 9-11 million, then gradually falls back down over 2-3 years.

With that said, even if the game is almost ten years old and they have only improved on texture quality, while still using the same game engine, the game has mass diversity. It has thousands of quests of all types. It has expanded crafting which will be vastly improved in the next expansions. If you don't like questing, do PvP. There is PvP Battlegrounds: 10v10, 15v15 and 40v40. Then there is PvP Arena: 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5. Then there is the option for World PvP where people get together to raid opposing side cities and towns.

There is something for everyone to do: raids, PvP, dungeons, crafting, achievements, questing, story/lore, professions, exploration and even role playing.

The game still has many years left in its life. Not only will a 5th expansion come out later this year, but a 6th one is already in development. Blizzard took people out of their Titan MMO team and put them into WoW. That says a lot.

For $10, you get all the way up to Cataclysm. For $20 more, you get MoP. Currently it's $30 for the full game. It's simply a double subscription for the first month, then $15 a month afterwards.

Well I’ll tell you why I started playing WOW, and that’s because of the immense depth of storyline, the multitudes of gear out there that suits any and all classes, roles, and professions in the game. The lore is also deep, especially with the books Blizzard published also about the lives of many of the main characters of the game; those books complement the lore beautifully.
I also enjoy the game for the thrill of the dungeons and raids involved, doing those also builds friendships when you join a guild and do these things with your guild mates, or guildies as they’re usually called. PVP is another part of WOW that is really enjoyable, depending on the server you choose, you get to pick when and where you want to battle another player.

I hate games where every time you see someone, you must attack them or they can attack you whether you like it or not. With WOW I can choose to attack or not, and they have the same option. It also isn’t too expensive, 14.99 per month and that’s it. I’ve been playing for six years now and probably will for another six years, so I suggest giving it a shot since you like MMORPGs anyway.
