Has anyone experienced character deaths in an MMORPG due to unexpected, and uncontrollable facts such as lag?

For example, when you are fighting a mob, then all the sudden your screen froze for a moment, the next moment your character is laying at the feet of the mob you are supposed to kill.

I have also experienced something else. Once upon a time I was using a wireless Logitech mouse. Yes, a wireless mouse has the advantage of not having a wire being in the way sometimes, but it comes at a price too... I was playing too much, so the batteries were drained every two days or so. When it happens, all the sudden I was unable to do anything with my mouse... and obviously it always happened when I was in the middle of something "important"... LOLz.
So I often ended up dying due to the wireless mouse lost its power out of blue. I had to get a wired mouse to solve this unfortunate setback. Note to myself, NEVER use a wireless mouse for gaming! Unless you enjoy the sudden lose of control in the middle of the game.

Has anyone else experienced sudden out of blue situations that killed your in-game character?

It happened to me so many times I get used to it. Whenever I get disconnected I just shrug it off and continue playing, even though it feels a little annoying to die because of lag/dc. There's nothing you can do and being mad won't solve the issue.

Yup yup yup this used to happen to me on the regular until I changed my video settings and upgraded my internet-- it could've gone on forever. Rage quitting is useless in these cases because it's quite obviously a technical problem.

I do get lag spikes sometimes although thankfully most of the time it doesn't happen during a team fight. On occasion that does happen but there's not much I can do. Also what I hate most is the constant lag that's very subtle and only causes frame rates to drop which makes the game very jittery but I'm just thankful I'm able to play.

I use a wireless mouse all day with my computer for work, college classes and games. I get a couple months out of the batteries with heavy use. You could have been using less than stellar batteries, a mouse model with bad power consumption, or both. based on my own experience with wireless mouse and keyboards I'm going to have to say that if you buy the right ones and use decent rechargeable batteries they are more than sufficient for gaming and heavy usage. Older models on the market had power and distance issues, but current items should perform well.

The wireless mouse I had was a combo came with wireless keyboard in one package from Logitech. They weren't cheap. And my gaming usage was super heavy. I am talking about 10+ hours a day playing video games where the mouse was always moving nonstop. The battery for keyboard could last for a month or more, but the mouse could only last for 2~3 days at most.

Even if the battery could last longer, it would still suddenly run out in the middle of gaming if you constantly play games. Better battery won't change a thing.

It really depends on the death punishments of the game. In the old days of UO, you used to lose everything you were carrying when you died, which meant probably logging in and having to spend 15 minutes gettng requipped.. and that was after finding a way to get rezzed.

Games like WOW have basically no death punishment, so crash-deaths are not a big deal at all.

I have died more than a few times because of lag. One time I was lagging really bad as I went into a dungeon and was healing, and ended up causing the group I was part of to wipe multiple times because there was nothing I could do about it. I felt pretty bad about it.

I have also experienced server reset or crash deaths. When the server was reset, all you see is the screen froze for a few seconds before you are sent back to the login screen. Yet, sometimes you can see your character died when you logged back in. Worse, sometimes when you logged in, you are in the middle of a huge spawn of NPC mobs. And no way you can get out of it alive.

Yes! i have died from lag or uncontrollable problems and lost everything, sucks a lot! Thankfully I do not experience it as much now and do not carry much on my character just in case.

What do you mean by "lost everything"? You found your character naked at level 1 again?

Most of the games will not make you "lost everything" upon death. The harshest I have played was have randomly chance to drop a thing or two or none at all, with 4% XP (of a level) lost.

I mean like equipment or goods my character was wearing at the time.

Yes, I had a general idea about what the "loss" part was referred to. Yet, I still do not understand how you lost "everything". Which game was it? How is it possible a single death will make you lose everything you had? If it is that harsh, how do they expect people to continue playing?

The game is runescape, I have been playing it for 12 years. In the beginning when the game started you could lost everything every time you died. Now they have where when you die you go to death and can pay game money to get your items back. However if you are it the wildy and you die you do not get your items back you lose them if you die, I frequent the wildy a lot in the game.

They seem bound to happen, but I do think that this is one area that games are improving in overall. I would not be surprised now that I said that, though, that things start taking a turn for the worse.

Issues caused by things out of your control such as a server error is about as frustrating as it can get for online game players, but I think it's something that most of us have just learned to deal with. I'm sure that we have all experienced situations in the past where we have got disconnected at the most inconvenient moment, but it's all part and parcel of playing online.

When you see the FAQ pages for most games that are out today, one of the most frequently asked questions is can you make the game more stable and reliable, and while I'm sure that the game manufacturers do try, there's only so much they can do and while it's not perfect on most games now, it is slowly starting to get better.

When I used to raid in WoW, there was this one boss fight that would DC me every time. As soon as I stepped into the room, bam, I'd get disconnected. It happened to a couple of others as well. So, we had to form a new strategy for pacing things until everyone was back in game to do the fight. It was a crazy bug, but we kept going anyway, ha ha.

Nothing better than a guild full of fun people working together (and working around bugs) to take down a boss.

I agree that when we do work together to get past a problem it makes the experience even better, but still...really we shouldn't have to. I'm sure that we all accept that bugs happen in games but surely it should be down to the game developers to fix the problems rather than up to us gamers to just try and find a way round them?

If we keep doing that then there will end up with more bugs in games than ever as the makers will just stop solving them because they will be used to us just finding a way round the problem without it being fixed, so they'll stop bothering.

Yeah, you make a very good point. In that particular situation though, we were competing against other guilds for server first, so we just adjusted (we of course reported the issue as well, but yeah... it took a while).

I honestly don't know how they get away with some of the poor quality and long term bugs, especially in a game like WoW. It's buy to play (game and expacs) plus pay to play (sub) and now even has a cash shop on top. You'd think they could throw a few bucks towards better quality control.

I do feel as if the issue is getting worse and not better though, and like you say something should be done and should have been done a while a go. Things like this do spoil people's enjoyment of the game and from the game developers point of view, then you would have thought that just for their own pride they would want a game that works as well as it can.

I know that maybe from a budget point of view they may not be able to fix all the bugs, but the bigger ones surely need to be looked at, and money invested.
