Do you like and consider eSports real sports?

What do you guys think? eSports is really getting very popular with games like LoL (and SC2 in Korea). Do you consider it a good thing and do you consider it a real sport?

I like eSports and I do watch some competitive LoL, SC2 and Hearthstone from time to time and I do enjoy it a lot. I wouldn't, however, call them a sport, just like I wouldn't consider poker a sport. Sports require physical activity and I do not think clicking a mouse counts as such. Yes, eSports can be fiercly competitive, but they are not sports in the classic definition.

    From wikipedia:

I don't consider it a sport just like I don't consider Nascar a sport as far as watching it I don't think I ever will to me it seems unexciting to watch.

Much like Kaplan wrote, I don't consider it a sport as well. As far as my understanding goes, a sport requires people to get physical and move. Do you consider playing cards a sport?

I wouldn't consider it a sport, although I don't think physical activity is required for something to be qualified as a sport. Chess is an officially recognized sport, for example, which I agree with. Even though I don't consider it a sport, I do like watching eSports. I especially like watching Dota 2, since I play it myself and there is a very active scene with a lot of high level teams. In the past I enjoyed watching Counter-Strike as well.

It depends. Classic FPS gaming is considered a sport in my opinion, while MMOs aren't. I guess it all depends as to what you classify as a sport.

No, it is not considered a real sport. That's why it has an "E" in front of it. E-Sports refers to the prowess, intellect and wisdom of the the mind. Real sports work not only those areas, but also the physical aspect. Clicking your mouse and tapping your keyboard with your fingers aren't physical enough. If people do, they might as well say sleeping is a sport because you breath and roll around. ;)

I love e-sports. I would say that they are their own thing outside of sports though. I've never understood why they tried to cram non-athletic things under the sports category. For example Chess. It's just different, and there should probably be a different word to explain it.

I don't really consider them a sport. For me a sport is something physical. I don't do sports myself but I still think it's something physical.

I agree it does take a ton of skill, practice, and dedication but to be fair that goes with anything you do rather it be chess, playing an instrument, drawing etc...

The concept of esports is not that new. I personally considered the old-school FPS competitive scene and later on the strategy and starcraft wave to be sort of like an "alternative sport". You should ask yourself this question, "Is chess a sport?" If so, yes, indeed games could be a sport too. As far as interest goes, I believe that an intense high ranked game in LoL for example could be just as exciting as a good football match, but each to his own.

E-sports are real sports the same way NASCAR is a sport. A sport is still a sport whether or not there is any physical contact.

I love eSports and I don't see a reason why they can't be sports. Like a lot of people already said there are plenty of "sports" where there is no actual physical activity.
Here is an interesting fact that some people don't know, but competitive gamers get "Athlete's VISAs" :p

I like real sports but as far as considering them a real sport... I would disagree. There's just no physical activity involved and when you think of an athlete, you usually see them as someone who is very fit.

That's true, but that will mean that all car, chess-like sports aren't actually sports... heck if you pay attention to the physical appearance(being fit) even SUMO won't be a sport lol :p

I don't consider cars or chess competitions sports. However, I do consider SUMO a sport. This is only because they train physically for hours on end.

That's just my opinion of it haha. There's a fine line for me.

Of course everyone have different opinion and vision on what "sport" is. If we go according to wikipedia it's something that involves physical activity, however in recent years I think that the word has "evolved" and now a sport can be considered anything that can be competitive :)

If that's the case do you consider rock paper scissors a sport? Or maybe Monopoly? It does get pretty competitive from time to time.

Competitive being something that there can be a tournament and win cash or other price. So yeah if there are tournaments(not one time thing, but at least every now and then) I don't see why it wouldn't be a sport.
