Do you prefer PvP or PvE in MMORPG?

When you play a MMORPG, which activity is your favorite?
Versus other players, or go kill some NPC monsters?

For me, unless it is an interesting, well organized raid, I am not a fan of endless killing of mobs. It is boring, but a must in order to level up. PvE to me is basically what others called it... grinding.

PvP is a different story. Players act differently from each other, and there can be so many things happen when you have two clans at war. In Lineage 2, we even had castle sieges where every two weeks hundreds players fought in organized large scale battle for the control of castles.

So for me, PvP takes the point.

    What about you?

Both, I don't mind a little bit of grinding in PvE to get those cool items but what's the point of getting a new shiny sword and armor if you can't battle other people. PvP is funnier, that's for sure.

I like both equally as long as they are well made and well designed. If the mechanics are well thought out by developers then it will never get boring for me. I like being able to interchange between both because I usually binge on one when I'm in the mood and by the time I'm done I feel a bit tired and sick of it and being able to play another mode helps with cleansing my palette so to speak.

I like PVE the most honestly, dungeon raids especially where tactics are needed the most.

Tactics against NPC is easy though. It might even be the same every time.

For PvP, it is an ever changing situation especially you have large scaled group PvP going on.

I know in some games PvE is still fun, but most MMORPG I found the PvE to be boring. Heck, they are called "grinding". I only like PvE if it is a nonstop moving forward adventure instead of repeatedly killing 10 this, 100 that type of mindless killing.

By the way guys and girls, which MMORPG's PvE is actually fun? I haven't found any. Neverwinter Nights have fun PvE (but it isn't an MMORPG, I am not talking about the MMO version of it).

I prefer PVE vastly over PVP. PVP is alright, but I am horrible at it and it drives me insane. I will always be down for hacking at some enemies or bosses, but god help me if I try to fight another player. I literally only do PVE against my friends, because we're usually goofing off when fighting each other.

I love pvp because I tend to excel at it. There's something extra special about doing something that's my own unique strategy that works and getting random hatemail from some stranger, the good times...

I like PvE when it comes to console gaming but on my computer I guess I lean more to PvP since I play League of Legends. When I'm just relaxing on my couch though I like playing Fable, Halo, AC on my playstation.

I can see why you are more motivated on this mode. I think there's something very fun and exciting about putting up your skills against others and you're right when they get salty after a loss to you then that's just icing on the cake.

Yep, but I don't do it for the emotions. I used to be really big into the trash talking side of competition, but I'm 26 now and already found my zen :) It's more about just achieving and doing things that produce shock and awe that gives me joy, I see the salt as immaturity because I recognize that it is what it was in myself at the time.

Haha yeah. I think that is part of growing both in life and in playing games. I also found myself becoming a lot more calm as I play nowadays. At one point I was part of the banter but now I find it a lot more entertaining to just sit back and watch or listen to others go at it.

I personally prefer PvE content when it comes to MMO's. When I want a more PvP focused experience, I play other genres of games that aren't an MMO. PvP also kind of stresses me out, due to the pressure from the other player's on your team.

I can play PvP and do quite well, but I prefer PvE. It's mainly because PvP seems to fill up with juvenile drama and trolling in most games I like.

I agree there is pressure and stress involved when the game is open PvP. But without PvP, there is really not much to a lot of MMORPGs. Unlike regular RPG campaigns, you have a storyline and go through a single route to do whatever quest or mission you intend to complete. In most MMORPGs, the mindless grinding is the major part of PvE which I do not even find funny without a goal. The goal is to get strong and do well in PvP for me. So that was what kept me going.

Even in an open PvP game, we still have the option of stay in non pvp zone (e.g. town, village, city, etc.) if you do not wish to fight other players. Not to mention that In a lot of MMORPGs, they do not even have open PvP. So you always have a choice to "stress" yourself out or take a break from PvP. :p

Besides, I like the competition. There is little to no competition in PvE.

The problem with PvP players that don't do much PvE is that they try to use an argument based on why PvP is better than PvE instead of just focusing on the strengths of PvP. They make false statements and assertions regarding PvE.

Having playedd both at an advanced level, and having a good enough understanding of both to make an argument of one against the other, I will have to say I like PvE better. PvP attracts to many marginal personalities. It also attracts a lot of adolescent players.

If you abosutely hate the so called in-game "politics", then maybe PvE is better for you. I do not like the "politics" either, but it is a part of the large scale warfare in PvP based games such as Lineage 2. Players form clans and alliances to fight each other in organized fashion. Fight over castles, fight over hunting grounds, and fight anywhere they see each other. Yes, it can be stressful for the losing side, but people always have a choice to quit the war or the clan they are in, and even the game they are playing.

It's not the politics. It's the name calling, foul language, and rude comments. It's the /ragequit stuff. It's the teenager up past his/her bed time that thinks acting like a jack animal online is fun.

I prefer PvE to PvP, simply because PvP seems to bring out the monster within. Overly dramatic ranting, taking a defeat as a blow to self-worth, or accusations of cheating drive me absolutely bananas.

My opinion is that a lot of MMORPGs have been ruined, or retarded because they felt the need to add PVP on top of a basically pve game. PVP requires a lot more micro-balancing and feedback then a pve game. I think if the rise in MOBAs and Team combat games had come sooner, games like UO and WOW would have had a very different trajectory. The first 3 years of UO development were basically wasted as the dev team spent all of their time going back and forth on pvp punishments and rewards. By the time they finally figured out to remove non-consensual pvp, the pve had been so stagnant for so many years that other games just waltzed right by.

The same is true of WOW. How many character talent and skill changes were forced onto pve players just to create a really sub-par pvp part of the game which could never compare to something like COD, LOL or TF.

It is just an impossible development ´riddle´ to balance pvp and pve in the same game.

EQ2 is a prime example of a game where PvP was an afterthought. It's still screwed up today. Battlegrounds are a mess and the rules don't make sense. Neither do the battle mechanics. Lots of unfair fights with glaring advantages and disadvantages on abilities.
