Do you think the scenario they're doing is overused?

I'm talking, of course, about the fact that the game is set in a post apocalyptic setting. There are plenty of games that have used, and are still using, this kind of scenario to tell a story or to make a game out of it. Do you think that they can pull it off without it feeling stale? If not, what do you think they should do instead with the kind of gameplay system they're creating?

Honestly I think it's unique because it's not so much a post-apocalyptic setting but it's set during the event that causes the apocalypse. That to me is an important distinction.

We usually arrive in a game like this where society has already adjusted and gotten used to the new world, but with this, you're actually living through the transition. It's only been a few weeks since the virus appeared. I think that sets it apart from similar games and I'm intrigued as to how this will play out.

Right, I haven't thought about that. It's like those zombie movies where they never show you the moment it starts, but only the aftermath. Good point. This will be interesting indeed.

We can't really tell, the beta will most likely answer this question. I'm sure Ubisoft have thought about some interesting things to spice up the game, they won't really go with an overused cliche without having a clue what to do.

    Wait, the beta's out? I haven't noticed. :O
It's so annoying that it's just for preorders. I don't like preordering games...

Not really. To be honest, when you think of it, like 99.9% of all games have scenarios that are reductive. It's the same old scenarios, with a little bit of tweak and/or some addition. But they pull it off anyway. So I'm really not worried about it at all. I'm sure they'll do it justice.

I totally agree with you. Most of the games from 2000 up until now only presented us post-apocalyptic worlds. This time, we're getting to actually witness the apocalypse as it happens, and this is really exciting and interesting.

The setting itself is stale, but with fresh gameplay ideas and aesthetics, it can still be enjoyable. I agree that the post-apocalyptic scene has been beaten into the ground. I remember there was an entire cycle where nothing but zombie and apocalypse games were all the rage, and thankfully that has died down. The whole virus taking over the world and "infected" enemies is a common theme that I know we will continue to see for quite a while, but like The Last of Us, the Division can take steps to make the game more enjoyable and pleasing without relying on an infected / zombie / apocalypse vibe. Currently, its PvP and PvE gameplay makes up for the setting, and has kept me interested since the game was first teased a while ago.

Ultimately a fun game is a fun game. I'm not against an overused scenario if it's done well, but this does feel like a strong premise so I'm not really worried.

I agree with you @guruproto, I'm suffering from zombie-fatigure myself.

I don't think the post apocalyptic feel is overdone quite yet. I think they can still make it unique. People might expect it to be the same as others, but as long as they spice it up a bit it'll be fine.
