Don't laugh, but I seriously do not understand this game

My son is addicted to Minecraft and I have no idea why. I have watched him play the game time and time again and it just seems like the only thing you can do is build things, which is great for him being he loves to create things anyhow, but for me personally, I just can't see myself getting into it. Am I missing something or what? Maybe I am just a bit biased when it comes to the types of games I prefer to play, but I just don't understand what all of the hype over this game is. Any players want to chime in and help me out?

The key here is that you just watched him play. This game isn't exactly the prettiest or most entertaining to sit back and watch (though there is a huge market for that). What really drives home this game as one of the most phenomenal gaming experiences of all time is the sheer amount of creative power the player is given. Imagine you were given the unlimited resources of the world? What would you create? A castle floating in the sky? An underwater, lava, rollercoaster? Literally anything is possible in this game. Not only can you make your random creations come to life, you can actually interact with them and live inside your own world. I would say give it another shot and really get yourself comfortable in the world. Build a house, go exploring, fight some baddies, and really just lay back and have a great time as you see your imagination come to life.

Yes, it does seem like your options are unlimited when it comes to what you can create. I have watched him create entire walls of lava and fire. He really seems to enjoy the creative side of the game. I think you are correct, that I need to just get in there and have a go at it in order to fully understand what the hype is all about. Thanks so much for your input and suggestions. I think I may end up enjoying the game due to my being a creative and imaginative person, but only time will tell, plus it may give my son something to bond over.

I remember googling 'What's the point of minecraft game' back when i first started playing the game and i got answers like 'there is no point in minecraft, you just build things that's it' and i dumbfounded and i wasn't sure if i want to keep on playing. But the hype made me curious, so i gave it another try and now i'm addicted. I realized i like the creative mode and just let my imagination take over. It's fun, it gets boring but it's mostly fun, good distraction when you want to kill time.

Yeah, I thought the same when my kids started playing. They finally talked me into trying it out and at first I was still not that into it. After I started seeing all the cool things on Pinterest that people had built in minecraft I started getting more into it. I love to build dream homes and then decorate them. I don't do much else to be honest!

This is exactly it. My brother and I used to play a lot of Minecraft back in the day, and we'd always say that Minecraft is a game that's really boring but really fun at the same time. Once you get into the rhythm of building a really cool house or contraption, or once you start adventuring into mines, you're really in the game. There's no goal and there's not really a score, so you're basically having to make up your own goals. For some people, I can see how that might be boring.

That sounds like a great idea! I know me and my friends love having LAN parties over Minecraft and helping each other build our random creations. Or we end up just fighting each other. Either way, it's a blast.

I remember hearing about Minecraft and watching a gameplay video. The guy playing the video just couldn't sell the game to save his life... it looked so freakin' boring, plus he kept dying or trying to mine rocks or some crap. To be honest, that completely turned me off from the game. I get the gist of it, I get that you can be creative and do whatever (supposedly someone even created a computer within Minecraft that can somehow play games? A game within a game? I could have that wrong but I swear I remember reading about it).

Would it be unfair to say that perhaps I'm not the target audience (male, mid-thirties)? It seems that Minecraft has appealed mainly to younger kids, especially with events like MineCon and stuff.

Well, kids (and adults) in particular love to use their imagination to build things, and Minecraft gives them this opportunity. The game is a sandbox, meaning you can do anything you want in the game. There are a lot of options, and the game is immersive as well.

I only really like Minecraft because it allows you to make whatever you want. If you want it, you can make it a possibility. It keeps you hooked though because to make what you want you need to gather supplies and sometimes there is roadblocks such as mobs, lava, etc.
