I won't even start the complaints about Ranger Mode and being unable to check ammo. All I'm doing is looking for a fix.

Has anyone had any luck with modifying the flags in user.cfg? I found the flags show_game_ui and ranger_mode_game, but they don't seem to affect anything--the gamesave itself seems to dictate those options. The saves are all hex-ish or something and I can't tear them apart with a text editor...

My goal is to play on Ranger: Hardcore with the UI enabled. I want the increased damage, rare ammo, and other realism mods. I can put up with ugly white UI icons if it allows me to know what I am carrying around with me.

    Ideas?

I'd recommend you simply try Normal Hardcore with the crosshairs turned off, it's much better than Ranger Normal imo.

I agree it is the sweetspot between difficulty and realism, ammo is less frequent, Humans and Mutants are more deadly, basically it keeps you on your toes when sneaking about!

One other thing I hope they fix in a patch is the knives, one knife kills every time no matter where it hits? And you can retrieve them? Perhaps they can make it so after so many throws the knives break and become unusable? I found myself just sneaking about and throwing knives for the first part of the game which while cool seemed a smidget overpowered !

Haha, yeah I killed a guy after he took a throwing knife to the knee, ending his adventuring days for good!:D

Oh no... lol Did you ever play Skyrim from Bethesda (coolest game)? There was a quote in the game which went viral "I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee". Everyone changed it to whatever they liked, I used to ' fill in with whatever you like ' but then I took an arrow to the knee! I guess you already knew this anyhow but to those who didn't there it is :)

Maybe we can start that with Metro? lol In all seriousness, I wish they put hit detection in with Knives too, it would be nice if you hit them in the leg and they hit the deck but then started to crawl towards you or roll over and fire instead! (I guess that would require alot of work, new animations though etc) Realistically the knives should break or dull after a few throws and break, this would make it a bit more challenging too!

Tbh, after all the outrage here I was very close to not even starting the game before this gets fixed (ranger hardcore is the only game mode I truly find fun, normal is annoying with bullet sponge bosses and, in general, everything taking too much dmg to kill). Then I started it out, and, while it certainly is -retarded- that there isn't some immersive way of checking out how much ammo you have I'm rapidly finding it doesn't matter whatsoever -anyway-

The important stuff such as your gas mask filter status is visible on your watch still (genius move, that), the compass is still there, and with a lot of the weapons you can tell how well the clip is doing just by looking at the weapon, and it really isn't THAT hard to keep track of your bullets, especially if you play stealthily in which case the only ammo you'll ever have to worry about is shotgun ammo, and that kinda makes it even more fun and frantic, worrying if you'll have another spare mag just as the mutants charge you.

Tbh, the bigger issue I'm finding so far is just how damned easy ranger hardcore is.. less bullets.. who needs em anyway? so damn easy getting headshots on enemies, and tbh the stealth seems even easier this time around, as long as you're patient you could pretty much never have to kill anyone (knock outs are viable too in case someone hasn't figured it out, press the use button instead of the melee).

Anyhow, yeah.. I'm finding the lack of hud etc to actually be fine, the issue is more with how easy ranger hardcore is, and, as someone mentioned, how op the knives are. But ah well, I'm only up to the Red base, hopefully things get a lot tougher :D
