I had a pretty bad experience with Fallout 3. Instead of doing any of the things I was supposed to do I literally started walking north until I get brutally assaulted by mutant fire ants who continued on to kill me swiftly and quickly. I lost all faith in games like Fallout ever since. Maybe it's only Fallout but I don't prefer games with too much open world. I don't mind having RPG elements but keep it simple.

That's strange, because I found it fairly intuitive to get to the first city. As soon as you get out of the vault, with the light glaring into your eyes, you're on a cliff with an awesome view. There's even a sign that says "Lookout Point". Everything, except for things off in the distance is flat, except for one, obviously man-made place, and that's Megaton. You get all the first low level quests there. Sure, they didn't cram your face into it and force you to go there, but most people who have played it go there right away just to check it out.

Well, to each is own. I personally enjoy open world games with high technicality and detail like Fallout 3. When starting most games, if you stray from your mission or the story-line and pick a fight with a bunch of random creatures right away, you'll most definitely get yourself killed.

This happens a lot with people who play games like this. Personally, I love open world games. Those are the best games in the world to me. But I hear this a lot with Fallout, someone doesn't know how to play the game right, fucks up one playthrough, and decides due to that one bad experience they never want to play the game ever again. I think you should give it another chance, or at least rent or borrow new vegas and try that out. You've got to realize that if you're looking to just shoot everyone you see and not follow the game, the world of Fallout is inhospitable. You have to be ready and follow the dotted white line. You can go off every once in a while, but if you're a noob you're going to end up extremely frustrated. At the start of the game you need to just play it safe, once you level up a bit the game becomes extremely fun and the world in practical terms actually will open up to you. It's my favorite game on the 360 console stacked up w/ Skyrim. But hey, if open worlds not your thing, it's not your thing. I'm going with Open World opposed to Linear gameplay. I just find linear way too boring.

I use to think about free world games like that too, but since I played Fallout that changed. I can never get enough of free world games. I can spend hours playing them. I seriously say to give Fallout another chance.

Personally, I think people who have issues with open world games are the same people who fail very badly at following instructions. All you need to do is go to point A, B and C. Instead, you CHOSE to go off somewhere else, then blame the Open World environment.

That's like your mom asking you to go to the corner store and pick up some candles. Instead of walking the 5 minutes on a straight path there, you decide to head the other direction where a sign says: "Mine field".

    Seriously?

In an Open World, people have the CHOICE to go other places, take on other quests, explore and find loot. They DO NOT have to do it. It's an option.

If you thought Fallout 1 and 2 were 'simple', they were less Open World than Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but the exact same premise was there. You had the choice to walk somewhere else on that map. The invisible walls/borders may have been a lot smaller than in FO3 and NV, but they were not linear games either.

Ultimately people, this is about CHOICE. If you don't want to get killed by Giant Fire Ants, why in the nine hells did YOU DECIDE to walk north and not follow the instructions? That is YOUR problem and not the game's problem.

"Yeah let's blame Canada because I chose to walk off a cliff when my dad said to explicitly follow the path."

How did that happen lol, well apart of the fun is the massive open world and all the freedom it affords, so getting murdered by fireants should have motivated you to level up, also you can also run from them

That`s the way the game is telling you that you are too low level to go that way, and it nudges you to go the other way to experience the story the way it should be. I find nothing wrong with this approach. You just have to level up a bit and then return there and take your revenge on those ants. :D

They sort of herd you in the right direction but a lot of fun challenge can come from going to a higher leveled place.
