You don't have to say anything you don't want but what can you say about your families history?

For instance my great grand father Jean George poitras was one of the first French settlers to come to Canada in the early 1600's. He was a carpenter (the modern equivalent of a surgeon 'pay/prestige' wise) and had 26 children with two wive's from the 'Filles du roi' (the kings daughters) a plan to grow the French population of French Canada.

I found it pretty cool to look at my families history. What do you know?

Well, some of my family migrated to USA in the early 1800's, and rumour has it that one of their descendants "Ironside" in a movie. Also, my great-great-great-great-grandfather was a major engine behind the Constitution, and he of course signed it as well. One of his descendants is Kasper Hvidt, famous handball goalkeeper.
Other than that, all I know is that MY branch of the family is 100% danish since 200 years. So not much interesting ethnicity in me, I guess.

This is a brilliant idea for a thread! :D It will be great to find out more about my fellow metro dwellers' histories, and to share mine. ;) Here's what I got:

My grandfather from my mother's side smuggled food for the Jews in the early years of the war when he was a youth. Later on, when he was a bit older and the Nazis were getting their asses kicked, he joined the Armia Ludowa and fought for Poland's freedom. We were never sure if he reached Berlin with the Red Army because he didn't like talking about it, and I never got to ask him because he died when my mother was young - before I was born, but he still did many heroic deeds during World War II to help Jewish people and fight the Nazi forces.

My great grandmother from my father's side smuggled arms and food during the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi occupation, using a tram and pretending that there was a child in it. She was very crafty and apparently, the Germans she encountered never searched the tram because they were fooled by the disguise.

As some of you may know, the Soviet Union took over my country shortly after the war and called themselves our "liberators", whilst in truth they would be the next empire to pretty much enslave us and rape our culture for years until 1989, when Poland became "free" (well, as free as any capitalist country is - which is not much, but much better than the police state of the USSR). But before then, in the 70s and 80s, my dad was a pretty rebellious man against the Soviet-controlled regime and risked his life & freedom in many protests, anti-propaganda actions and more.

There were a few other cool stories as well, but those are the most memorable ones that I can share. ;)

Well, i have a lot to say about me...

My Father side of the family takes its origins from the austrian baron Pascal Von Tief.
Many of my ancestors went to America in the early 21th century. So, i have tens (if not hundreds) of cousins and second-grade cousins and aunt and uncle that i have never seen or spoken to in my life.
Most of these people live in Germany,USA, Canada, Argentina.

My mother's side has aswell from Austrian origins, although the 2 branches didn't come in contact until my Parents.
My grand-grand-grand-grand-father was a Austrian who married an italian woman in northern italy.

Maybe it's because i have so much Austrian blood in my veins that i have fair skin and eyes, and am blond with straight hair .

And talking about deeds, comething i can say is that my grandad deserted the Repubblica Sociale Italiana's army (Germany's puppet ally in italy) and spent quite some months on the run, with his brother (after their mother had died during an american bombing).

Well my dad was in the russian airforce for a while now hes a civil engineer. My (moms line) grandfather was a radio op in the russian army for a while and was in the paratroops. my great grandfather (moms line again) was this officer in the old KGB (dont know what he did though).

My fathers father was a missile op on the eastern coast of russia ready to fire nukes to alaska and california (funny cause i live here now). His grandfather was a factory owner and during the German invasion of Kiev he was the last person to leave since he destroyed the factory so that the Germans would not get the info. (It was a military factory). And en route to the evac site in St Petersburg Russia on a train, the train was attacked by the german airforce and he barely got out alive.

My whole family is mostly from russia, ukraine, and etc.

And farther down the family tree im not quite sure. Probably peasant. But my g g g g g g g grandfather or something was a cavalry member. :)

I'm related to a Painter and a Hero, or so the records say... Dunno why. If you ever heard of Juan Luna, that's who I'm related to. I think he's either a really great grandfather or a really great granduncle. I can't remember the details.

That's about all the things I can give about my family history that might seem interesting... :(

from my biological family I have no idea since I was adopted at the age of three, but from my dad's side, he came from irish settleters in spain, and from one of Miguel Servet's brother (who discovered the pulmonary circulation, among other things he did) and got burned at the stake in 1553. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Servetus

on my mum side, she come form a line of lawyers, but nothing outstanding.

my parents (adoptive) passed away a few years back.
