In comparison to the rest of the series, Final Fantasy 1 has aged absolutely terrible. SUPER grindy, super cliche story with no meaningful charachters.. What do you guys think? Am I being too hard on it?
I think it's absolutely awful. The only good thing about it was that it gave birth to Final Fantasy, but the game has nothing going on for it now. It's a chore to play, a real bore. It aged terribly.
Every first series game from the 1970's and 1980's age terribly, but we should not fault them considering they were created at a time when these sort of games were fresh and new. Without them, there will be no evolution of the series. No nostalgia, no history to base faults and improvements on. They were the creations of that era, not meant to be pushed into the laps of gamers 20-30+ years down the line. It's like criticizing Pong or Q-Bert because they are repetitive compared to today's gaming capabilities. Final Fantasy was fun when I played it in the late 1980's and I haven't touched it since because I think Final Fantasy 6 and 7 hammered down what I felt were great FF games of the series. They are evolved games that stood the test of time.
True, those old games still get respect for being what started a series but they really, really did not age well at all. Look at Tetris for example, that game is old as hell but it actually didn't age as badly. Or Super Mario Bros, still playable today despite its age. Final Fantasy did not stand the test of time like those two did.
I do agree. Even if they remake FF1 into a completely 3D game, it still would suck. The story is lame and has nthing interesting going for it. The gameplay and combat would bore the heck out of gamers. The dialoge would make your anus hurt. It's a classic but it doesn't mean that it's a good game. If it had a nice story, it would have been good. But I guess video game companies didn't have people who wrote stories working for them in the past.
Well, at the time creating meaningful stories for games was kind of a new thing, especially for consoles. PC games have been experimenting with it for a while. Before then most of the games were a form of platform or scroll & shoot kind of things. Also the development teams for these games were much smaller at the time too, usually being something like 4-5 people. I think it'd be nice if FF1 was totally revamped into something a little more modern with TLC that it deserves since it was the start of the entire FF franchise.
