It seems like most people I ask prefer Final Fantasy 7 over Final Fantasy 8. What do you think? I've never been too much of a fan of "cartoony" games, so maybe I'm biased, but I LOVED Final Fantasy 8. There was nothing better than spending my afternoon as a kid, playing Triple Triad for hours.
Here here! I like FF8 a lot more than VII. FF8 got my attention outright with its eye popping cinematics. The in-game graphics were very impressive as well. Gone were the Super deformed characters of FF7. The love story theme and the music was pretty good too.
Here I thought I was the only one. Sure Final Fantasy 7 brought the series to the world, but Final Fantasy 8 in my opinion sealed the deal. For the playstation generation, FF8 was the best graphics and always wanted to keep on playing just to see the next cut scene. And to include a music video of Rinoa and Squal, loved it.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one! Yeah, the plot, especially the story between Rinoa and Squall, definitely kept me interested as well. I still pick up the game every year or so and play it through again.
FF8 for the world. I liked 7 a lot but 8 was what really hooked me on FF games. Squall will always be my favorite main video game character. He was extremely well done by Square Enix and his personality and quiet confidence made him a star in my eyes.
I think Final Fantasy 8 went over better with me in regards to the story-line and the way the game progressed, but the actual game-play could have been better if they left the magic system somewhat similar to Final Fantasy 7. I get they were trying something new, but it was rather a big jump from the two and it didn't quite hit the mark. They were both great games though, so you have to give them that at least!
I did prefer Final Fantasy VIII over Final Fantasy VII. FF8 is definitely underrated because everyone is in love with FF7 for whatever reason.
Same, I like FF8 over FF7 due to how the characters were developed as well as just how good the game looks. Also, I may have had an addiction to the Triple Triad mini-game...
I think everyone who played that game had an addiction to the Triple Triad Mini-game, and in fact is probably one of the best card games even in comparison to the newer games in the series. On Steam, I actually unlocked every single card but about two or three which I can't obtain until I progress further in the game. I am a bit of a perfectionist, so unlocking all those cards is a must!
I kinda wish I still had my old game so I could go back to playing it, but I have to rebuy it again. It would be cool if there was an online version of Triple Triad for me to play . I found that to be a game in of itself for the most part and I can see myself spending hours playing it.
I fell in love with Final Fantasy 8 more than Final Fantasy 7. The story, character development, graphics and cut scenes all just sealed the deal for me. I remember playing this game and being such a fan girl for Squall and Rinoa. I actually just downloaded an emulator on my phone two nights ago so I could play FF8 again, haha!
If you have Steam, I would just wait until it goes on another sale as often times it goes to 75% off, which for such a classic was a great deal for roughly $5 even though I actually own the physical copies of the game and most others, too! It's a different feel on the computer, but it's still fun non-the-less. They actually have it on Steam now if you're familiar with that, and with some slight modifications you can play it with the same quality music that you're familiar with on the PSX.
Tempting, but my current computer is a piece of crap and the last thing I need is for it to melt on me just so I can play a mini game. I'll just look around online for a used copy and try my luck there.
Well in fairness, it's a pretty dated game so you may very well be able to play it on a very low spec computer! Best of luck though and I guess it's good to be on the safe side
Thanks but I was able to finally get my hands on a used PS2, so now I can play the game. Thank goodness for eBay~
But the mechanics in 8 were quite messed up. You could get to level 100 in the very first part of the game if you wanted, very easily. You could also beat the game at level 30 or something. Due to the junction system, you can't really use your strongest magic as it would make you weaker. Also, if you summoned GFs it would make your SeeD rank go down. Loved, loved, loved the Triple Triad card game too though
Congratulations! It's probably better to play on the PSX, but playing on the Playstation 2 still has quite a lot of benefits, so you can't go wrong there, either! I would recommend checking out Final Fantasy Tactics too if you haven't tried it yet, quite an amazing game in the Square Enix realm of things. Enjoy!
I prefer VII simply because I like the story more. I have no problem with 8, although the junction system is pretty damn broken. The materia system is also much more fun to use and while it can be complicated at times, it works well most of the time.
FF8 is my favorite of the series, but I feel like it all comes down to each individual taste. FF has such a vast array of stories and characters throughout the series, and most of them are very good games. It's no surprise that people's favorite can be any in the series.
The only game I really cared about from Square Enix was Parasite Eve which I have the copy of both games for and love it to death. You cannot believe how disappointed I was with the third game...anyway, I'll be on the look out for Final Fantasy Tactics then, since I've heard decent things about it.
