O.k. so I have been playing wow for about 8 years straight and have heard about private servers all the time. I do have to admit, I'm a tab bit under informed on how to even go about finding one and then asking to play on it. The idea of it sound intriguing. Can some one let me know how I would even start to look for one and the process I would have to complete even to get to play on one? Thanks so much guys!

They are horrible. Most of them are set up to reward the owner and his friends who cheat on everything and give themselves whatever they want. They are for the most part unstable and very laggy and most of them have no development at all, just ´wow´ at some point in time.

Since you can now play WOW by using ingame gold, there is no reason to play a private server unless you are the one who set it up and wants to dominate other players.

Thank you for your response, I think I had the wrong idea about private servers. They seam to be something that I may not be interested in. I am all about working to get the best gear and so forth but I would not want to have it just handed to me. That would take all the enjoyment out of the game. Thank you so much for the information.

It's not entirely bad in my experience. Some of the private servers actually try to improve over time and have dev teams working as much as they can. It's not really the professional support that you get on official servers, but it's something. The leading private servers have a donation system in place, and you can vote in their website to raise popularity. In turn you get vote points, which eventually you can use to buy certain items from their so called vote shop. The game mechanics are pretty much okay on some servers, but with every new update one or two of the classes become OP, while other receive a bad nerf. Try one or two, not hard to find a decent server, but decide which expansion you would like to play. Up untill Cataclysm, the servers are okay. MoP and WoD servers, with one or two MoP exceptions, are the worst. The game is completely broken and nothing is working.

I didn't realize there were private server for WoW. I can't imagine that they would be very stable or reliable unless they were a large operation generating revenue. Even then I would think it best to stick with Blizzard and know that things work and get updated in a timely manner.

I knew about the private servers, but I've only heard bad things about them. I don't think it is something that I would be interested in. I'm sure some are at least trying, like Rad.ko said, to improve and keep up with maintenance but overall I'd rather leave it to Blizzard.

Private servers are bad news when it comes to World of Warcraft. Major copyright issues because the server side source being used belongs to blizzard but was never released to the public. Blizzard hunts them down and takes legal action.

Getting on a private server is as easy as creating an account and downloading the client. I play on a Burning Crusade server and found it super easy to set up and introduce to my friends! Choosing a server is probably the most difficult part, as you have to choose between compromises. On my server, there are a couple of bugs, but I get to play on a Burning Crusade server afterall! It all depends on what you want. Make a list of what expansion you want to play on, and order your priorities, such as if you want to get achievements, or level up at a reasonable pace.
