Division is going to be a third-person shooter, and looks pretty sweet in the role thus far. It also seems to me that RPG / shooter hybrids usually wind up in a third-person perspective. Still, first-person shooters dominate the field in many ways. Which do you prefer? First-person or third? And if you could, would you ask Ubisoft to include a first-person mode? I'm content with third-person, myself, but I know there's a big market for FPS. The re-release of GTA V with first-person is proof enough of that.
For the most part, I prefer first-person shooters. It's just what I'm used to, so if I'm given the option (in a game like GTA or Fallout) I will probably choose first-person perspective. Still, I think that there are some excellent third-person shooters out there. Mass Effect comes to mind. I think the reason why so many RPG/shooters end up as third-person is because in third-person, it kind of feels more like you're in it? I can't explain it, but I think that there's something about creating a character, and then being able to actually see that character throughout your time playing.
That probably has something to do with it, no doubt. I also wonder if the reliance on extra abilities in shooter hybrids plays a role - they might not be as graphically impressive if done from a first-person perspective. I don't think Division will work this way, but the ability to swap party members in 3D RPGs - though not necessarily 3D RPG / shooters - might have something to do with it. Might as well just show the character in their entirety if you can see them on the screen already when playing as your main.
I think it's a good thing they're trying something new, I get sick really quick of FPS, especially since they don't add anything new to the table. The Division should be pretty interesting, curious to see how I'm going to accomodate to TPS.
I prefer 3rd person myself. I find it gives me a better view of my surroundings and I like seeing my character, especially if I got a chance to customize it. I realize that first person may be a bit more "realistic", but I just find it more restrictive. I don't need it to feel immersed into the game.
I don't think they're trying to go for that FPS look on this game, instead they're trying to focus on making the game really immersive by focusing on your surroundings and sounds. Imagine a RPG-related game with first person camera, no bueno.
Theres so much more for the player in 3rd person, first-person shooters will always appeal more to some people, but 3rd person has the advantage of seeing your surroundings and assessing threats more effectively. It doesn't effect my immersion into a game at all.
Well if this was a first person game, my interest would've gone down immediately. I much more prefer a third person game, because I like looking at my character making all the cool animations and stuff. It's also better for understanding your surroundings, and this game is based around covers and how you go around the environment so I think a third person camera helps a bit more with that.
I think it would be best if you can switch from Third to First. But for the most part, I really don't have any preference. I've played both Third and First person shooters and they're pretty much the same feel, except FPS tend to be more "immersive" since you feel like you're inside the game, but it's all the same as long as the controls are good and responsive.
As long as the controls are good and work smoothly I don't see an issue with it being a third person shooter. Yeah a first person shooter lets you feel more immersed in the world because you're literally seeing through the eyes of the character. Third person could work though, I mean if hack and slash games can do it why can't shooters? There's also the appeal of seeing your character move and do all the cool moves, and doing maneuvers to avoid dying. I guess in my case I prefer third person.
That's the part I enjoy the most: seeing my character, especially if I get to customize it. I always felt it was a waste to spend so much time on character appearance and then going first person! You only get to see their arms, at best. I'm also pretty sure I'd stick to 3rd person if there was the option to switch back and forth.
I prefer Third since I can pretty much see everything and what's going on by just tilting the camera slightly. Often times in First Person mode, you can't really "peek" without having to show your head for your enemy to put a bullet in. Also it's easier to plot out your next move when you can see where the enemies at and where the next cover is. Another thing is aiming, although it's pretty much the same, I still find it harder to aim on FP view.
I like both but I prefer Third since I can see everything clearly and plan out my next move. FPS sometimes gets in the way of totally seeing things. I sometimes get killed when playing an FPS because I'm facing down for like half a second, with TP view you still have some room to check on things briefly.
I'm a huge fan of third person shooters, so I'm glad the game is in that perspective. I usually only play FPS games if I know it has a decent story.
The game is clearly built around the third person perspective so now it's a bit too late to ask for a first person view.
3rd person is a lot better for the perceptive of this game to be honest. Even when I prefer 1st normally
Ideally it would offer both, but yeah it seems to be geared towards 3rd person. It would be interesting to see if there's a way to change the view to first person, then you'd really feel like you're walking around New York City!
I prefer third person shooters in some scenarios. I think I prefer third person in singleplayer games, compared to multiplayer I prefer it to be First-Person. During Multiplayer, it restricts the overlooking walls to find enemies, without actually going through them, and in single-player, i feel like I have more time to look at my character and admire the design or customisation.
