For this game, Ubisoft specifically stated they were optimizing for gameplay rather than story, and that makes sense. The game has a very basic story and then gives way for players to tackle things how they see fit. What are your thoughts?
I hope the story is not lackluster. They can optimize the gameplay as much as they want but they shouldn't disregard the story. It'd be a dealbreaker for a lot of people, there needs to be a balance.
It depends on what they mean by a 'basic' story, I suppose. Just because the plot isn't shoved in your face doesn't necessarily mean it's there, and mission requirements could potentially cover a lot of plot-related ground that would normally be relegated to, say, mandatory cut scenes. It would be super cool if the plot shifts in response to how you proceed through the game. I'm guessing it's more a case of a threadbare plot with mechanics and game play first, like you say, but I can dream.
I don't think they would put in that much effort to make the game shift because of your choices, they already said that they won't focus on the story a lot. It's kind of scummy though, The Witcher has an amazing story that has numerous endings and the combat system is awesome - why can't Ubisoft do something like this?
The story element is only really fresh the first time or two you play a game, after that its just background. Great gameplay adds years to a game and is always the most important of the two for me.
Hello my fellow gamers. My name is Jorge Solis. I think that the story is quite important to me. Yet, I prefer the gameplay over the story any day of the week and I will tell you why. When I am playing I am not constantly thinking about character depth or story development. When I am playing all I think about is how can I survive the next level. Thus, the gameplay wins!
Gameplay over story is fine, as long as the story isn't completely neglected. A lot of Tom Clancy games follow the gameplay over story mentality, so it shouldn't be a huge problem.
I think it'll be fine. We can be sure that there will be a story in the sense that players will have a purpose in the game's world to do what he's doing. But Ubisoft is probably expecting players to have their own experience and their own stories based around the way they play the game. I don't mind it at all, personally.
As important as the gameplay is, I'd really love it if they put at least some effort into the story. I'm the kind of player who really gets into the story when playing (regardless of what game and what kind of game that I'm playing) so seeing half assed stories would really bother me. I really don't like games, movies, TV series and basically anything that are badly written.
Yes there definitely needs to be a balance. They can emphasize the gameplay over the story, but there still needs to be a good story.
