This is more for the people that have run a server before, but how do you choose the server staff, and what should you require from them? My server is a little understaffed right now, so I'm trying to build better communication between the staff members so they can each get pieces of work done more quickly, but there's only so much you can do with 4 people...

If you have any friends that play it couldn't hurt to staff them. Beyond that here may be a good place to ask. Maybe the official Mojang forums.

I've tried to avoid adding my friends as staff, because if they mess up it makes it that much harder to remove them from staff.

Try advertising on Minecraft forums like this one. Say that you want experienced Minecraft players that are willing to help on your server. Make them apply with a short CV in which they list their experiences. Simply pick the ones that are the most experienced and voila! Make sure that your post is appealing for the potential staff members. Include photos of your server and think of a witty description!

I feel that. Just do what everybody else does with everything... just offer it to people who are on a lot.

You should really get friends you can trust and promote them to staff. Depending on the size of your server, there should be a small amount of staff until more players join, then create helper applications. I don't think advertising on forums is a good way to get trustworthy and loyal staff. You should stick to promoting people you trust and like.

Go through an application process with the active people.

Yeah, the server has an application process on the website. I think it's an ok process but some people don't like it. Does it look OK to you guys? http://spaghettinetwork.co.uk/

I really like your website. I glanced over the application process and I think it's perfectly fine. I wouldn't change anything! If you still don't have many people applying, you need to work on site views. Try to post your link to as many forums as possible, so people start visiting your website. I would also suggest replacing your server IP with your website, if that is allowed on this forum.

I would replace the server IP with the website, but the website actually doesn't have the server IP anywhere on it :p All of the play now buttons just link to the planet minecraft page (which does have the IP). I don't really want everyone using the domain name to join the server, because the domain name is an additional cost which I'm not sure if I'll want to keep after the domain expires.

Oh, i never noticed that. Why wouldn't you have your IP on the website?
Ah, I understand that the website costs additional money. But it really makes your server look more professional, so I would suggest you keep it, if you can afford it that is.

Yeah, I think I can afford it. Still a little extra work though, especially for something I really don't care enough about. If it makes it look that much better, then I suppose I can, but I still can't make everyone else use the website IP (or at least the people that already have it, although that's not really important).

One of the other problems I need to sort out at some point is that I don't have a banner to put on planet minecraft (or other server lists). I found one on google images a while ago, and I've been using that, but at some point I'd like to make my own, but I have no idea what I'd want it to look like so I can't do that yet.

I didn't actually mean that you would move your server to the website name, just post the server IP on the website so people see it. :)

Well, finding a great banner shouldn't be too big of a problem :)

Try to find people that have a good reputation within the community that don't already staff multiple Minecraft servers. You'll want people that have a decent amount of free time and know what they're actually doing. It never hurts to check out what they've done in the game before, too.

The website is OK, but I think that it should be more of a Minecraft format rather than a default and plain looking design. You should add a forums and ban reports (though there are already ban appeals). Good luck.

I understand you don't really want to staff your friends, but if any of them have experience with it, it wouldn't hurt to try. But as other people said, I would try posting on forums, advertising for staff, and exactly what you want from said staff, it would probably be easier that way and you would have more of a selection.

I did think about adding ban reports, but to be honest it's more work than it's worth. I'd either have to find and set up a plugin to list the bans automatically, or I'd have to write them in manually every time, and people don't really use the website anyway (unless applying for staff), so I'd rather leave the website with the 3 pages it has for now.

Choose your most trusted friends, and if you choose someone you don't really trust then watch them like a hawk.

Dude, try to spice up that footnote a little. Advertise it with your best things to offer, and put a small picture in it. If you can, I don't personally know how, put a status circle on there, like a green one so people know it's on right now for them to try.
