We all know about it, we all have to deal with it. We know it's there to waste time, and we just... keep... doing it. Do we really need it in a good RPG? What are your thoughts?

I actually think it's because a lot of new games don't think it through when it comes to providing quests. I remember running out of quests to do in a lot of games . They'd calculate you'd hit certain level with these quests but nope you didn't. You hit the level a lot earlier then you ended up not having quests to do. Rune of Magic is one of the example I had where I ran out of quests to do when I hit lvl 35 and you ended up doing something like daily I forgot. The wings were nice ,and the fact you could buy stuffs for your house but it couldn't get me keep playing.

The only MMO I used to play was Cabal Online and that was because it was unique and actually had a story with a beginning and an end other then that I just play RPG's because not only is it boring and tedious to level up and pray for the good stuff you also have to worry about getting hacked.

I have always despised grinding games and always will. It's one of the ploys used by MMOD devs to keep us engaged in any game.

I'm a PvE kind of guy and I don't mind grinding for a few hours a day to level up and finish some quests. What I don't like is when a game puts a lot of emphasis on grinding that it takes the fun out of the game. The good thing is that most new games are very light on grinding, with quests and storyline being the main focus while leveling up.

I don't mind it that much. Especially if it's grinding towards something important... not just grinding to kill time.

The good things about grinding is it helps you think kinda like how it would if you're doing a mundane chore. But the important thing has to be the back-story, if we're told why we have to grind coz' it's important then I wouldn't mind grinding actually.

In my opinion, grinding gets really boring, really fast. A little bit is fine, but you shouldn't have to grind as much as you do in most MMOs. When I catch myself grinding, it really breaks the immersion. A good game should be designed to make you level up without noticing. For example, game designers could set up sufficient amounts of quests and side stories to accompany you through all the levels. DC Universe did a good job with this. I managed to make it through all 30 levels and barely noticed the grinding. The quests just flowed with the leveling system flawlessly. I'm sure there are other solutions to this problem, but I'm no game designer so I wouldn't know.

I personally hate grinding and I'm one of those players who never could/did grind because I found it too tedious. I only did quests to level up really. Grinding in a party is probably the only acceptable form of grinding, and I think we should get rid of it in most games, but keep it in some for those who like it.

I have no idea why we do it..but we just do.

But I will say that this tactic is becoming old now and more and more players refuse to do this anymore. This is a thing of the past and this is the reason most MMOs which come out nowadays rarely do well, as it's tough to find and make a new player base for themselves as no one is interested in grinding anymore.

The older games still have it easier as they already have an established player base which is still okay with grinding, but they too are seeing their playerbase diminish.

Sometimes mindless grinding can be good after a hard day at work. It is really satisfying to just click spam buttons in a game like Diablo and faceroll everything for hours.

I don't mind grinding once in awhile, as long as there is a chance for some great profit, like some random epic loot or some rare crafting materials. Doing something so relaxed every so often is necessary in MMO games, but ofcourse dealing with raid bosses etc is a lot more fun.

Yes, raiding is a lot more fun sometimes, but I seldom do it. I don't like PVP gaming in MMORPGs to be honest.

Grinding often results from bad developer planning. A good game is defined by good planning, however, not all of us have the time in the world to produce such a game. As such, games with grinding often result from the limited timespan in planning and production. It's hard to blame the developers, but it kind of is their fault for not thinking it through about their game's future.

I've never really found the need to grind, if its a good MMORPG you should get enough XP to not have to grind that much. I've always enjoyed grind quests too, really any grind/killing of anything teaches you a whole lot more about your playstyle/class it feels to me like it should almost be there just for that reason alone.

Grinding for me has always been a way for me to unwind after a hard day of lets say raiding in a game. It lets me look back and think "Wow, look how far I've come from the days I was killing stuff like slimes." Like any other person however, I despise just grinding for killing time. I enjoy grinding because it allows me to work toward a goal, maybe I'm trying to drop something or hit that last level. The pleasure and sense of victory I get when I hit it makes it all worth it. Grinding is a key part of any MMORPG for me even though it may not be the most exciting part. Too much variety and cool stuff and wow and pizzazz can get boring fast. You need stuff like grinding to keep you expecting more and keep you engaged.

I'm a sucker when it comes to grinding, but it has to have some kind of profit, ANY profit. When I was playing wow, when I was bored or not feeling really good about playing I would grind to relax myself, mindless grinding <3.

Yes, it's something you need in an MMORPG for balance and to keep your players playing. If everything was done easily you would be bored with the game and probably quit it.
I personally enjoy grinding when I'm in the mood, it helps relax you.

As much as we hate the very infamous grinding, it's actually a vital and important part of MMO's, and over the years it has actually kinda grown on me, because it's one of those repetitive boring tasks where I would put up some music and grind, maybe call a friend or chat up on Skype, just chill out. Time consuming and annoying? Definitely.

Grinding has become such a typical element of MMO's that developers are deliberately putting grind mechanics, instead of accidentally screwing up the gameplay, like it used to be.

It depends, I've played games where grinding is really boring and I can't do it for a long time because it is really repetitive, but I've also played some MMORPG's where grinding is actually fun. In the end it all comes down to the game.
