Lot's of discussion into the classes but if your serious about pvp, min/maxing, or just don't want to risk the reroll to fill that skill gap you should be much more concerned about race and here's why...

When you choose a class you know what your getting. The role and style of that class is customization within the boundaries of how that class was designed to play. No choice is permanent and can always be undone from gear, class skills, stats, "talent points", etc. No choice with the exception of race (confirmed).

No matter how much balancing there is going to be better synergies between some race/class combo's. For example a class with out a lot of mobility will see more value in the sylvari snare ability. Looking at the norn tree which is slated to give access to 4 additional elite options i'm sure there is one that could make a good class/weapon combo great. Could a thief's dual dagger spike get 10-20-30% better with Avatar of Melandru, Snow leopard, or Battle roar? And lastly, will a guardian become totally un-killable in a Golem Battle Suit or Bear Form?

I hope we see more focus on this prior to launch because it could make or break a toon that gets weeks of my game life! I've copied many of the known abilities below for reference...

    Human
Avatar of Melandru - shape shift of some sort
Hounds of Balthazar (elite) - summons 2 fiery dogs to fight
Prayer to Dwayna - self heal
Prayer to Kormir - condition removal

    Asura
    Arcane Blast - ?? Ranged direct damage and/or condition/knockback??
Radiation Field - ?? AOE dot similar to GW1??
Golem Battle suit (elite) - Single player buff (since anyone can use the suit)

    Sylvari
Blessing of the Pale Tree - Self protection ability
    Grasping Roots - Ranged immobilize

    Norn
    Bear (elite) - + health
    Raven (elite) - ?
Snow Leopard (elite) - Damage buff
    Wolf (elite) - ?

    Charr
    Battle Roar - ??
    Hidden Pistol - ranged damage and/or condition/knockback
Shrapnel Mine - cripple and bleed status effects
Warband Support (elite) - summon allys
Artillery Barrage (elite) - ranged AOE

very true, i am awaiting to find out the racials for each race. It is gonna play a vital role on the final decision for which race i would pick because it would need to complement my profession however i hope it's not so major that your profession becomes "gimp" compared to others who picked the superior race for their profession.

I don't think it will be that major, it seems like each race has quite powerful/useful racial's for any profession but i get what your saying. Positive we'll get more coverage on this before launch, i'd imagine they are still working on this as well to get it right before they come out with all the details.

The Human shape shifting sounds really cool. Check that out just like the other race that can shape shift. :)

HAHA, i cant post links yet... ok bear with me below. Grabbed it off the GW2 norn overview. It's kinda buried in there.
    {gw2 site on norns but i cant post it}

And for us lazy ppl here's the copy/paste from the gw2 site section on the Norn race.

    The Spirits of the Wild
The norn have no gods in the human sense of the word. Instead, they venerate the Spirits of the Wild: totemic powers, the great spirits of the wild creatures. Each totem has virtues and lessons to teach the norn: Bear has her strength; Wolf teaches unity in numbers; Raven is wisdom; Snow Leopard speaks of cunning and stealth. There are other spirits, too, some unworthy of veneration, some dead, some merely missing.

The norn have the ability to shape-change into forms beloved by the Spirits. While transformed, they become closer to those spirits and to understanding the power of the wild. Norn enjoy the bounty of the land, but they do not despoil it, for the wisdom of the Spirits brings them an understanding that tempers their direct, quick-tempered natures.

Another good place to look except they have been slow to make updates from the closed beta.
    wikia... cant post it.

Looked around and found only one concept art of a Norn woman who is 1/2 raven. Lot of sites reference the four spirits. Also check out the official races video about 2 mins in on the official site. When the Norn orator says the four spirits guide them: Bear, snow lepord, raven, wolf. You will also SEE the giant standing bear and hear the sound effects from each of the four animals including the raven. They show a wolf and a raven but i don't know if they are just mobs.

So this raises another question. I've SEEN youtube vids of guys playing bears or leopards in game... POV w/ skill bars and they are cool and look smooth. How will the raven look hovering a few feet off the ground? Or would it be hopping around like a parakeet with clipped wings. Hope it looks ok. (off topic somewhat but your comment just dawned on me).

That is also what I was wondering, It's kind of lame to be a bird and not be able to fly. >_>

Something I read in the Question and Answer stuff that took place in December gave me the impression that Racial abilities are disabled during competitive PVP. I'll see if I can find a quote.

I didn't see anything on that i don't think. But i wouldn't be surprised if they are disabled competitively.

I did some follow up and generally there is agreement that devs said "structured pvp" would not have racial abilities allowed. I breath a sigh of relief on pvping in the mists but i get concerned all over again with WvWvW (generally accepted as non-structured type pvp). This can be a really big part of the game in some cases (DAOC!). In fact WvWvW would be the greatest driving force behind my thief toon as a solo ganker. I hate the asura's but will probably roll one if my thief opening combo is 20% harder hitting in a golem suit.

Thanks for the heads up, I followed your lead and learned a lot more about this topic. I only wish the rabbit hole didn't go deeper due to the WvWvW issue.

    Thread resurrection!!!

Human - Only unique skill seems to be the aoe snare. Better for meele but could be "oh shit" for a ranged w/ tree or snare.
    Pets, Tree form, cripple/poison AOE

Norn - Appears to need work, would be nicer if it could be a true oh shit button but its hard to tell if any of that serves that function. (tankish?)
    Meele forms of various types.

Char - Good all round... probably best compliment for a non-aoe meele build.
    Aoe, ranged, pets

    Silvari
??? - I expect this to supplement ranged

    Asura
    ??? - I expect this to supplement a caster

    Avatar of Melandru

Well here's the skill description of the Avatur of Melandru elite dervish skill from the last game. Whether or not the GW2 skill will bare any resembelence to this I do not know :/ Just a thought :)

"Elite Form. For 10...74...90 seconds, you have +100 Health, +30 elemental armor, and your attacks deal earth damage. Whenever you lose a Dervish enchantment you lose 2 conditions. This skill is disabled for 45 seconds"
