Have patches and expansions ever forced you to stop playing a game?

This isn't about likes or dislikes to changes made in a game. I am asking about system requirements. If I play a game for a few years, eventually upgrades are made to the game - better graphics, more effects etc. I find that I am gradually turning down the settings to lower quality to maintain performance levels. Have you experienced this? Have the minimum system requirements for a game ever exceeded the rate at which you upgraded your computers?

I have played a game that eventually became to much for my computer to handle. Playing a game requires a certain level of dedication and having it upgraded to the point that you are literally unable to play anymore is infuriating. I really hope the game I'm currently slows down their upgrading or I will be unable to play yet again.

Sometimes yes sometimes no. Most of the times a patch will improve the game as much as possible but when it comes to expansion packs... I have to admit that I'm very disappointed because of it's price but most of the times It's worth it. Even though...Mists Of Pandaria made me quit World Of Warcraft because of the price and that it was pretty much a fail in my opinion. My opinion regarding games is mostly neutral it depends on the quallity of the expansion packs.

I did experience this when I used to play Perfect World. The game had a patch update and because the game was originally coded in Chinese, there was a compatibility issue with the patch as the game client doesn't seem to recognize a certain file included in the content update. It was obviously a problem on the part of the game publisher for not performing a thorough testing before releasing the patch, and it took them a while to sort things out. I waited for 3 days since the patch release for the fix and then gave up, and I heard it took about a week for the fix to be released, and I'm glad I didn't wait that long as I found a game to play which became one of my favorites.

Yes quite a few to be exact usually it's a combination of bugs, or other problems with the sever, but sometimes it can just be that the game feels p2w which is the worst in my opinion.

As a owner of Dual 7970s, what are system requirements?

Never had it with system requirements. It has happened to me due to changes in gameplay though.

A lot of the games I've played I will usually play on lower setting so I haven't really ran into this problem.

Patches and expansions haven't been an issue for me so far, but recently when I got a beta invite for Wildstar I realized that my PC can't handle the game that good. This Tuesday I'll be getting my new PC and I expect at least the next 2 years not to have any issues with any game :p

Nope, never happened to me before. I like patches and updates because most of the time they fix bugs and glitches. Unless that patch happened to create game breaking bugs then that's another story. Even so, when I really like the game I'll just wait till another patch gets released.

Thanks for the replies all. I just want to reiterate here that this wasn't a comment about quality of expansions or patches or about bugs. I was commenting about system requirements. If a person starts playing a game on a two year old computer it might run just fine for a few years. The new expansions comes out with improved graphics and greater system requirements which may exceed what you have or the setting need to be dropped so low it feels like you are playing pong.

This did not happen to me before. However, it did happen that I quit an MMO because the changes to the game totally destroyed the class I was playing, making it near useless.

I keep my computer about 2 years ahead of the system recommendations in upcoming games. So I've never had a problem with this before.
