Have you ever regretted the money you sunk into an MMO when it shut down?

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end at some point. Our favorite MMO games aren't immune to this very real fact. So sometimes, the purchases we made over the years go away as a result of the MMO server(s) going offline.

When that happens, have you ever had a feeling of regret about the money you put into the micro transactions over the years?

No, not regret. I understand the risk that the game can shut down and I look at it as I'm paying for a service rather than paying for a 'thing'. Besides, if I can help support a game that I enjoy playing? That's totally worth it to me, because I can still say I had fun while it was around.

That's a very good way to look at it. Many people have this idea that these games will go on forever in some sense.

For example, I remember the fans outrage with City of Heroes going offline. People don't realize that despite it going offline, we had more than 10 years of enjoyment out of that game. So in that sense, the money spent was well worth it.

Luckily, that's never happened to me up until this point. I wouldn't regret spending that money on a game that shut down, though. That's just what happens with some MMOs, even the ones that used to be huge among gamers.

I think the only MMORPG I regret spending money on was Age of Conan, which was a piece of garbage at launch. The other games I played like UO, AC , WOW, and even Earth and Beyond gave me enough satisfaction that I felt the money was worth it. Earth n Beyond is the only game I was actively playing when they announced closing down. I was surprised, it was actually a really fun game.

So long as I use them before it shuts down, then I live a regret free life.

I've never played a game that's later been shut down, but all of the games that I no longer play, I don't regret. I feel that the money I paid for the subscription to a game was worth it, especially if I kept renewing it.

No, not really. Nobody ensured me that my investition would be a lifetime guarantee, therefore I accepted the fact that the money I gave would be futile the next day. I do feel a bit sad over a few games which closed meanwhile, but you know... it's just a game.

The only game I ever bought that had servers down, or about to be down was Haze. I only spent 2$ on it for my son, so I didn't have any regrets.

I think that anything that provides entertainment is a good investment provided you are spending within your means. This world is so crazy and full of bad stuff that if I can find enjoyment in a game, even if I have to put a few dollars now and then into it, that's fine. That said, I don't usually do F2P games for a variety of reasons, but I've spent money on WoW on vanity items (pets, mounts, etc) and then stopped playing the game. Did I feel like the money is wasted? Not really. A mount was like $20, and it gave me several hours (or more) of use. I've wasted $20 on a crappy meal that I didn't enjoy, or on a shirt that sat in the back of my closet before I gave it away.

Just be aware that, at the end of the day, those $2-$3 that you find ephemeral might potentially stack up to $500, like it happened to me, and this is why I became a little bit sad over the investment put into games which were ultimately closed without further notice.

And, yeah, I also agree with you on the point that spending money online is a great relieve method for some, but we must be careful to not make our enjoyment become an addiction!

Not at all, the only games I think I bought were WOW, UO and Earth and Beyond with EnB being the only one that shut down, but even still, I loved the game and wish it was still going, but I got my moneys worth so don“t feel bad.

There are a TON of single player games I bought that I regret..

For sure. When I say I spent $2-3, I mean it, but I know for a lot of people (like my husband) they think "oh its just $2" and then by the end of the year it is a few hundred. You really do have to be careful, perhaps even more so with the small amounts than the big ones. At least with the big amounts there is no adding up, you know you just spend $20 on something. But the small amounts will get you. I still think that if you have $500 to burn on stuff, wonderful. Personally even if I had that much disposable income I wouldn't feel comfortable spending it on a game, but then again I've spent more than that on WoW between the monthly fee + expacs + vanity items. So what do I know.

No, never. It's like regretting the time spent doing something I enjoy after moving on to something else. I don't spend a lot though. A few dollars here and there to spice up the looks of some characters I main in different games.

No because I'm not stupid enough to spend my money on a game. Well actually, I would only if it's pay once to play, but not something that's a subscription or pay to win, never ever.

I have not played a game that has shut down as of yet, however I have sunk money in games that I don't play anymore. I don't regret it because at the time I really enjoyed the game and was happy. If I was happy and having fun, why should I regret spending money on it?

No, not really. As far as hobbies goes it's extremely cheap. The cost of 3 fast food meals a month at most for a subscription. $60 for a base game/expansion is like a few hours' worth of work that lasts on average 2 years. A night at the movie theater costs about $25 factoring ticket price, meal and gas for 1.5-2 hours of entertainment at most. Eating out 1 meal a day at an average cost of $5 per meal for a month costs more than an MMO sub + game/expansion.

So when you put that into perspective- if you constantly play then there's little to feel regret about because you're paying for entertainment and as far as cost goes...you can't get cheaper than an MMO.

Although, it might feel empty because it's not an investment, it's a waste of money.

I think I feel more regret and remorse when I sink money into an MMO I just get bored of. At least if it's shut down I can say "at least I enjoyed it". Where as if I simply get bored of it I would think "I wasted my money". Of course it would depend on how much I paid and how often after I paid it shut down. If I put $100 into a game and it shut down the next day I would be furious.
