...ok ok... jokes aside, I think anised nailed it. The baby Dark One has a firm concept of male/female and other vertebrate mutants in the game retain separate sexes. I think I must have missed the diary in question though.

My pet theory is that the lack of visible genitalia is because they are retracted internally, like the way it is with snakes and lizards today, and only emerge during mating. With reptiles, it keeps them at a steady temperature for sperm survival and protected against scraping along the ground...I guess a male Dark One wouldn't want his family jewels getting constantly cooked with radiation no matter how well adapted the species is to the surface.

 

People can be heard talking about the dark ones and how they "have no privates" in one of the levels im not sure which.

The truth is no one really knows. They are psychic beings so maybe all they have to do is touch?

 

Well little child when a mommy dark one and a daddy dark one love each other very much they go to an abandoned buliding. Then the daddy dark one SHOVES IT EXTREMELY HARD INTO THE MOMMY DARK ONE HAVING HER CRY IN PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then a little dark one comes out in about 9-10 months.

my little theroy is that the dark ones are in fact not the evolution of man but infact weapons, why you ask well why would the dark ones be locked up in a bunker (D6) before the war? my theroy is that the russian federation created them as a form of "shock troop" which would be dropped on a enemy command position to make the enemy think that they are in the wrong/ or just fry their brains.

my resoning is that what proff do we have that the dark ones are good, do we take artyoms word for it after the kremlin incident? or khans? who may just be a hallucanation enduced by the dark ones into making humans become non hostile to them.

another thing i have noticed is the way the baby dark one can provide support to you (thermal vision etc.) but never chooses to do so unless it itself is in danger

Ok the diary entry is the one found in Polis towards the end of the game. I won't type the whole thing because it's four pages long, but here is an excerpt from it:

"...It was us, people, who had brought them to life. They emerged amongst us. Sukhoi, my stepfather, was right - they were the next stage of evolution. Next to ours. We were their fathers, they were our children. We had created so many weapons to destroy ourselves with... and one of those weapons gave birth to them. They are not like us. What kills us makes them stronger. We left them a ravaged, poisoned world. But they learned to live in it. They sustain themselves by absorbing radiation. After being born, they do not enter the world at once - for some time they continue to exist in a dream, growing and learning from the ones who came to be before them. What we destroyed was their home. But the place where their young ones slept was underground. Close to the Botanical Gardens. Close to the TV Tower. It was in the bunkers under the TV buildings, which were connected to D6. But when the warheads fell, the entrance tunnels caved in. The Dark Ones who were almost ready to enter the world got blocked inside..."

So it doesn't go into specifics of exactly how they reproduce, but does give some insight into the process.

 

It sounds more like how they would grow up, rather than reproduce. Since a little Dark One was living on the surface, and yet ...Spoiler:

...adult Dark Ones that emerge from D6. Either Atyom's diary is a contradiction, or young Dark Ones sleep in the bunkers but join the adults outside at least some of the time, explaining why the little one was on the surface when the missiles were launched. Its also equally possible that some adults were among the young ones in the bunkers too.

The little one woke up on accident. It's implied the nuking of the DO hive, and death of his mother, disturbed him. After that he made his way there and just kind of hung out for lack of anywhere better to go. The vision of him there is just that: a vision, and not reality.

That's true, I still felt like it was relevant as it tells us about part of the eary life cycle of the Dark Ones.
