How do you feel about Notch leaving Mojang?

I think it is interesting that he decided to sell his company to Microsoft. He used to tweet about not seeling his business to MS, ever. I guess 2.5B can change your mind.

I hoped he would stay with Mojang though. He just collected the money and ran away. While it is true that he hasn't been developing Minecraft for quite some time now, it would still be good to have him in the team, don't you think?

Notch didn't take $2.5 billion and run away. He obviously won't be receiving all of that money, but he'll get a good chunk of it. You try turning down that much money. He already stated that he wants to work on smaller projects, and that's far better for the gaming community in the long run anyways.

If you read the blog post on the Mojang website. He said there was too much pressure as they wanted to focus on other games as well. So this sell off is giving Mojang time and money to create another game for the community!

Notch stopped working on Minecraft like a year ago didn't he? Jeb became the lead developer for it once Notch stopped so it won't really make an impact on Minecraft in my opinion

Yeah, notch hasn't actually been working on the game for a pretty long time. I guess it'll change a bit without him there, but he's always wanted to work on other things. Notch kinda became minecraft, as much as he didn't really want to, and I guess this is the easiest way to get rid of the company. Legally it's pretty much not possible to give away a company worth that much, so I guess he probably could have gotten a lot more than he did.

Either way, notch never has to work another day in his life. He's still going to, because he loves what he does, but that only means that the games he's going to start making are going to be even better. All the best stuff is made by people that want to make it, not people that are just in it for the money.

I can't help but feel like he sold out but at the same time I can't blame the guy. I mean, if you were offered 2.5 billion dollars how can you say no to that? Sure he's not going to get all of that but goddamn I'd be flipping like hell if I get half a billion.

But to be honest I think it's good that he left Mojang. He did all he can with the franchise and I think I'd rather be out instead of involving myself when MS happens to crap out on Minecraft.

Yeah but MS bought Mojang all the same so it MS decided to create a major update for Minecraft the team still wouldn't have enough time to work on other games. And as for Notch well, the team did made other games besides Minecraft but nobody really cared.

Well, he made the game and sort of made it popular but I fully respect his decision, I could easily live off $2.5 billion for my life and my generations to come.

I mean that's nice that he got a big chunk of change for himself and his compatriots but.. I feel a bit.. betrayed to be honest and I don't really have any business feeling that way.. it's his company.. but, I hope minecraft doesn't die off now...

I don't see it as a betrayal at all. I just hope he goes on to develop something fresh and new like he did before with Minecraft. As long as MS doesn't go crazy and try to monetize everything in the game I think it will all be okay. I think they have a plan for the game and company, we just are out of the loop til they announce what that plan may be.

I think he did the right thing, now he just has to sit back and relax. He wasn't involved much with development the past year no big deal there, I think Minecraft will stay the same for now.

It was his choice from the start to be honest, I think he is just doing what seems right to him. Also, what's the worst that could happen? They wont change the graphics of the game right?

I honestly think he did the right thing. If he believed in his product why not sell it to a corporation that obviously knows how to handle and promote games well. If I made a game like Minecraft I wouldn't hesitate to sell it to Microsoft either. People can gripe all they want but he said he was done with the game and was on to better things. Now he will have the money to do whatever he wants dealing with that stuff. I for one can't wait for Microsoft to get full control and to see what they can do with the software.

2.5 billion is an incredible amount, I suppose every man has his price. I don't blame him, we were all lucky that he gave us minecraft in the first place so I won't criticise him for what he is doing now.

Without Notch, the company will probably lose its touch. No one will be able to replace the mindset that Notch had and the ideas that he put into his games. However, he did get a very large sum of money, one which even I would take for such a successful company. I do not blame him

I honestly don't blame him. Minecraft became much more popular than he ever dreamed it would. It also doesn't affect the game that much since he dropped the game off to Jeb and the team years ago.

I wish him all the luck and hope he makes something we can all enjoy as much as Minecraft.

It's sad that he left. He was the "heart" of the company.
Development-wise I think it's not a big problem. He dropped the game off a long time ago.
He got a lot of money and you can't judge him! His game became very popular.
Good luck to him in the future!

I think that for one he stopped working on minecraft some time ago anyway and altough he probably thought about some time, who would turn down 2.5 bn dollars from Microsoft? So I think MS will do a good job with it, its in good hands even though not with Notch, even if he was the "heart" of minecraft. I think MS know the potential and the huge fanbase of minecraft and I think they will revamp it and make it even more awesome than before because they have the resources.

Even though I know Notch wasn't working on the game for a long time now, to see him leave Mojang is very hard, I feel he was the soul of the company; it would be as if Gabe left Valve, sure there is a huge staff and everything would work the same, but there isn't the same feel.

I think it's okay. I mean he's not even working on Minecraft anymore so I think it's just a way for him to retire and move on to some of his other projects. But I think Notch is a big part of Mojang so him leaving would make a big change to the company.
