What kind of Fallout gamer are you? I find that Bethesda open world games are played differently by different people. I tend to follow the main storyline until I get some side quests, and then I side quest hunt forever.

So how do you guys play? Any people just run around and explore?

I jump back and forth between main game and side quests. Depends on whether a side quest really catches my eye or not. Anything to do with factions typically draws me away from the main stuff, and I like quests that involve quirky, weird, or otherwise hilarious NPCs. Same goes for playing Elder Scrolls games.

I sometimes go into a playthrough thinking, "I'm gonna be a dick to everyone and it'll be hilarious!" Then, after a quest or two, I can't take it anymore and I feel terrible for being a meanie, so I go on my merry way taking the nice route.

Aside from that, I take a nice mix of main quests and side-quests. Like, SLTE said, it really depends on whether the side-quests are interesting. One in particular that stands out to me is the quest in NV, Come Fly With Me - the one with the ghouls and the rocket ship.

I'm not usually the person who explores and does a lot of side quests, I tend to stick with the main story until the end. Whenever I go to find new things I get bored rather quickly! :p

100% agree STLE. Example being the painting quest in Oblivion, or the quest where you went into the person's dream. I love quests like that. I find that those are often delegated to small sidequests, so that's why I spend a lot of time there.

I'm inclined to exploring the world quite intensively before proceeding with the main quests. I don't like to miss out on any hidden quests, side plots or potential loot. I wasn't a big fan of the Fallout 3 main story line so I spent a lot more time exploring, but the Fallout NV plot was much more compelling so I progressed through it a lot quicker.

During my first playthrough of any Fallout game, I'll go through the story at least once just so I know what it's all about. I'll do some side quests and exploring here and there, but I mostly stick to the main story of the game during this playthrough because, why not?

In successive playthroughs, I'll do whatever the heck comes to mind as far as exploring and branching off from the main or even side (aka side quests) game. I only focus on story missions from time to time in these playthroughs, unless I have to do a given mission to get something that I want or want to access.

I like exploring for a bit before starting the main story, especially if what I find during said exploration will help me live longer as I tackle the story. Plus , I kinda have ADD when it comes to open world games since I'll get distracted and will ignore what I was suppose to do to follow what caught my eye. When I was playing Skyrim, I was suppose to go to Whiterun to follow the story, but I saw the river and thought that it would be a really good idea to throw myself in and see where it would take me and all because I thought the graphics looks really good:D

I like exploring a lot. I love finding side quests, new weapons, armor and stuff like that. I usually complete all or the majority of the side quests before completing the main story, because in Fallout 3, when you completed the game, you couldn't play anymore if you don't have the Broken Steel DLC, and I kinda do that in all of the RPG games that I'm playing or have played, like Witcher 3 or Skyrim.
