How do you think GW2 compares to GW1?

I was a little disappointed by Guild Wars 2 myself. I clocked in over 4000 hours in the first game which offered an experience that was truly unique. The way the game was structured made socialization efficient and easy, since you could instantly zone to any area for free and find new people to talk to. It also made people work together and be aware of what everyone's role was since everyone could only have 8 skills at a time, and challenging areas needed a team composition that could deal with everything that was thrown at it. Guild Wars 2 group content feels more like 5 people doing their own thing, and the lack of a Guild Hall makes guild activities harder to organize since you can't just meet up instantly and have a random party like you used to.

What do you think? Which do you prefer?

In terms of the hype surrounding the game prior to release it definitely was over hyped in my opinion, in terms of comparison to GW1 which I have limit experience playing I would say it's very much a superior and all round more polished version of the game.

This. I never got into beta but I believe I devoured everything I could get my hands on about GW2 about a year before it was released. It really got excited me so much, not just because of the promising new engine but in their quest to revolutionize MMO gaming. Big battles and no boring quests!

Fast forward to one year after launch and I'm just getting bored. Yes, you won't grind before level 80 but after that it's a grind-bonanza so to speak. Want a legendary? Grind for it. Want new armor? Of course, grind again. Want a new cosmetic? Need I say more? And the Player and Living Stories, though innovative, aren't really that much interesting anymore.

GW1 had the epic quest-storyline feel more than GW2, and that in itself made it a better game in that respect. Of course, there are things I still love about GW2, but there are a lot of things I miss about the original game.

I wasn't a real fan of the original but I think it was a better game and much better realized vision than GW2.

GW2 seemed to be a bigger effort to go after the typical MMO player but they gave them a game that did nothing a real MMO does, just window dressing and the look of being an MMO.

I miss GW1, the whole game had a different kind of feel to it than any other MMO's I've played.
I felt more involved in the story as well, while in GW2, the story is a bit boring and I keep skipping the conversation parts.
What I do like about GW2 is the events that suddenly pop up and anyone can join in, although you need to be on the right server with enough people running around.

I think its just too big of a change. There are some aspects of Gw1 I liked more than GW2, and vice versa. I loved the missions, character builds and farming in GW1. I loved the open world interaction, WvW and SPvP in GW2. I wish they would keep development for both games, and not be GW1 and GW2.

I liked GW1 a lot more. The PvP was far superior there, as you could expect a lot more organized competition, and it had this really cool feature of being able to make PvP characters even if you were a newbie, so you could jump into action right away if that was your thing, and not leveling and doing dungeons.
