How do you usually plan your builds?

I'm a terrible builder because I can't plan things out in my head as well as I'd like to. How do you guys usually plan things before you start laying down your blocks?

I don't! "Oh that patch of land looks cool let's make something on it" is all the planning I do.

I don't so much as plan really, I just go about and do stuff. The most planning I do was when I dig to mark my place so I would know if it's big enough or small. Also I tend to make it a habit to scout and plan where I will build which should be close to the resources I need.

Not much planning going on on my part. The most planning I have is to just find a suitable place to settle down my base. I would plan how I would construct the stairs on my treehouse but that's about it for me.

I'm not much of a planner but more of a "That looks cool! Im gonna build it!" type of builder. Im not really creative and I like sticking to guidelines rather than letting my mind roam free. A lot of my inspirations are from real life or dreams but some are from actual minecraft builds i have seen.

I usually just think about what I'd like it to look like in my head, then just build it.

I survey the surrounding areas and figure out all the local advantages and disadvantages I have. Especially if I am building a base or permanent house somewhere. I like using the sides of cliffs in almost all of my structures for safety. The other one would be to measure accurately. Don't just go laying blocks down all willy nilly. :D

I start my builds by always flattening the land below where I think I am going to be building. After I flatten the land, I usually base my builds of some kind of real life thing, like a castle. I then decide which material I should use for building, then get to work. I am not a very good builder, but when I get a build right, I am always proud of my builds and protect them.

On another note, This is kind of how I try to plan out my builds, but sometimes that doesn't go to plan and I just start building at a random time, without any preparation.

I'm a pretty good artist, so I draw it first on paper as a rough sketch. After that, I either start a flat world, or flatten the ground, unless the build is in need of a less smoother surface, such as on a mountain, in water, or any other ideas I might have. after I do that, I usually start with the outside first, and then cover up any flat areas if it's not on superflat to make it look more genuine. After that, all I need to do is fill in the inside with rooms and furniture, and maybe some mod content such as Thaumcraft or Ars Magica tools to make it look cool.

I don't really plan for what I want to build. It's just popped out of my head that "I want this and there" like that. No need for me to plan it.

(In my head) *hmm that would be cool*
(pulls out a shovel or building blocks and whistles while making something stupid)

That's about all I have to say about that. :)

I tend to ad lib my builds, but I usually have a thought in mind first. Something like "I'd like to make this out of clay blocks" or "I want this to be a desert-themed build." Recently I've been making a castle. I went ahead and made the floor plans.

One of the most challenging but fun parts of building is adding the little details that makes the build really stand out - changing up block choice, placing paintings, that sort of thing. I do that after the main shell of the build has been made.

I really don't plan, I just see something in my head and build it.

I usually do it in my head but I'm really thinking about doing some drawings of layouts before I make another house..

I honestly don't plan my builds. I see an area I would like to build on, then make the building happen. I decide on the appropriate size, decide which blocks I will use and start building. If my building has a lot of redstone, I do that first, then build around it, somehow.

I usually have a pad of graph paper on the desk next to me so I can make some quick drawings and it's very helpful as it's also divided into squares just like Minecraft is.

Brainstorming is quite simple, as I usually have a bunch of ideas that I could put into action. However, when I first start planning I think about how big I want the finished project to be: how many levels high, how big in square units, stuff like that. Then I make sure that this project will not conflict any other projects I have built. Finally, I think about the actual content I want in my structure, and then its build time.
