How important is having a character house in your MMO?

I am not exactly sure how many MMOs actually have houses. I know that all that I have played have banks, or a place to store your items. Ultima Online has an extensive housing system where you can design your own house. This also opens up a lot of space for private possessions. Not only that you have a place you can change and make personal. I don't think many MMO allow that from a player. Can you think of any other game that has houses or personal space for their players?

I think it adds a nice level to the game and customization that players crave. The issue with MMOs is that people end up pigeon holed into looking the same/similar and they want to stand out. The whole point of an MMO is to make a character your own and enjoy the experience with other people. Having player housing gives players a special individuality. A few of the Eastern MMOs have player housing and now WoW has the Garrison which is kind of like pseudo housing.

I was unaware of the garrisons in WoW, so I read up on it. Although that is interesting, it still doesn't hold a candle to the system in Ultima. Ultima is completely player-controlled, and can be placed in 75% of the game. The houses are made from the foundations up. Furniture and other affects can be added, as well as thousands of personal items. I find it hard to believe that a housing system could be more player-oriented than it is on Ultima.

Not that important but I love having more things to do in my game.

A few games with player housing (some better then others): WoW, Archeage, Rift, Runes of Magic, everquest trademark/next

I have played Lineage 2 a long time ago. In that game there were "clan halls". Clans can buy clan halls for "scroll of escape to clan hall". So you can teleport back to clan hall from anywhere on the map with a scroll.

For storing items, there is always the bank/warehouse.

That's for average action/adventure type of MMORPGs.

A private house is absolutely not important unless we are talking about something like Second Life, Sims Online, etc. type of games.

I haven't played an MMO that included housing, but since I play TERA, and they plan on adding guild housing, it sounds amazing! I personally think housing is not a mandatory feature in MMO's, but definitely desirable. It could be a meeting place for your fellow guildies, or a place to afk and chill while you do something else. It would be fun to decorate, and make it look as good as possible so other people can see how much time and effort you put in decorating it.

I didn't know this was a thing and would love to have one. Much like having a house in Skyrim, It is and can be very beneficial. To bad most games I play have nothing like this in them.

It would be cool if more games, Even games that aren't MMO would put this idea into place.

Probably the best feature of UO was the housing system, but what made it even better was the lack of an auction house, and instead you had personal vendors you could stock with stuff to sell. It created a really cool economy. And then they ruined it with AOS which made crafting really meaningless.

Housing is pretty cool, and I enjoyed creating my own house in UO, but unless there is functionatlity to it, like vendors, it is just candy.

Most of the MMOs I play make the house very unimportant to the rest of the game. I don't really care either way, though.

Yeah, I remeber those clan halls, that was a really nice option ^^

I don't care too much about it, but it's a fine option, especially if it's very customizable. I don't have played too much games that allows you to do that

Not important at all. Well, not unless it provides me with expandable storage space. Then the only thing I care about is how much I can store.

I've only ever bothered with player housing in a couple games and both times they were simply a waste.

I don't think that having houses in a MMO is that important. There's no sense of security in a virtual home thus meaning that there shouldn't be any houses in the first place.

Maybe it's not that important for the others, but for me, having a house/room or something like that is important. Let's check Path of Exile player hideouts - the best place where you can do whatever you want. Run maps (end-game content), decorate, improve your weapons/armours/stuff, invite people, do the partys and trades.. very important place. It would be nice to have a house at ESO or other mmo game too. Not just for decoration.

A game with a housing / barracks feature often means extra storage, personal crafting space, gardening space - sometimes you're allowed to raise pets. In most MMOs I always encounter the same basic problem which is not having enough storage space. You'll have to spend on it if you want extra slots.

A game with that is perfect for me. I like my character to have a house or anything. It keeps me at ease especially you can upgrade it to a better home.

It's not so much the flair aspect as it can provide space for people to just relax in the game and piddle around. Another thing is taking gold/whatever out of the economy in order to keep markets relatively stable and give long time players or wealthy ones something to spend their money on. It also offers people who are into crafting incentives to keep doing that aspect of the game as well.

Very important. I would almost say a staple given how many games have done it, it should just be included. Every game offers clutter if people don't take it, use it, or delete it. This stuff needs to be stored someplace other than vaults, like a closet or deep-storage. This is the house. Not only is it used for decorations and to give a more atmospheric feelings to a situation, it's a quiet repiste from the hustle and bustle of the open world MMO scene. Not only that, it feels nice saying "You have a home" in the game you prefer to regularly play.
