I don't get it.

Would someone mind explaining the appeal of Minecraft to me? I don't mean to insult anyone, but I just don't understand why it's so popular. The graphics are (intentionally?) ugly and I guess I don't see what you're supposed to do in it.

So...tell me what your favorite thing is about Minecraft. What made you start playing? Why do you enjoy playing it? What makes you choose it over another game? What are its pros and how do those outweigh the cons?

Open world exploration and building is the main appeal. Then there's huge projects you can do solo or with other people.

I have always seen the graphics as minimalistic, not ugly. And the appeal is that it has no point. Most game give a to do list, pressure you with plot, and make you feel guilty for not getting achievements. It's almost like work. But not Minecraft. In Minecraft, you can do what ever you feel like! Wanna build a house? Build a house! Wanna fight zombies? Fight Zombies! Wanna travel? Build a portal and travel to hell itself!

It's the ultimate sandbox really. There's generally no main objective other than the one you make for yourself. If you hate open world games then you'll really hate Minecraft lol.

I haven't played it yet, but I've played other open world games. It sounds like it would be fun to me. You're creating your own world, and pretty much competing with yourself. Graphics aren't everything always.

The graphics aren't ugly, they're just different. It is appealing because it's a sandbox game where you can expand your imagination. You could play a map for 10 years, so I guess people like when a game is "infinite".

I never really thought much of the game before I played it. I think around the time beta 1.9 was released, my friend said we should play for a few minutes, so I downloaded a copy of the game and it was OK. I played in creative only for a while because I didn't really get how the crafting system worked, but the game really took off after that.

It was great that I could go as far as I want and the world doesn't loop back round or stop me going in any direction. The game was pretty much infinite. But then it starts to get a little boring. You've done everything before, you've crafted everything and been to the nether, and the new updates don't really bother you much...

So out comes a new program called BungeeCord, which allows you to link multiple servers together, allowing networks of minecraft servers that have never been possible before. And with this, we get a lot of different minigames, and better ways of playing the minigames we had before. New maps, new plugins, everything. And there's new stuff coming out all the time, but a lot of the idea is that there is so much content out there that you'll pretty much never get through it all.

And I haven't even started on the non vanilla clients.

Minecraft really attracts those who like to build, craft, and explore (like me). It's pretty much like a blank book for a writer! There's just open space and resources that you can do whatever you want or can with. It's great for the imagination and allows users to do certain outdoor things that they may be incapable of doing in reality. For instance, I have no trees around my yard, so I cannot make a huge treehouse like i would love to. Yet I can accomplish that in Minecraft! It's a good trade off and really fun for those with a mind that is always cranking.

Mate, not all games are built around graphics. I personally look at that the least when deciding what's a good game or not. It all comes down to the fact if you enjoy exploring, crafting, and having everything then just be killed by night time zombies. :)

The biggest appeal for me is the fact that there isn't really a 'chore' list to get through. You decide what you get to do. You decide on how you want to play the game. You decide on what you spend your time on, and exploring is a must! I really enjoy making all the food (with mods, of course) and also enjoy the fishing and farm stuff. But, another thing for me is the fact that there are so many different mods out there to really attract someone else's attention to the game as well.

The graphics are intentionally blocky and pixelated. It's not intentionally meant to be ugly, since ugly is subjective. This is a style issue and not a quality issue. The in-game graphics can be changed with resource packs and shaders' mods.

I play games because they are fun. I don't play games for their graphics. If I want realistic graphics, I will go outside and enjoy the sun and the air.

The kids eat it up. Especially due to the overabundance of Youtubers miking this game, many people play due to it's popularity. Others play Minecraft because it is a game with limitless possibilities and can be fun when playing with others.
