One of my friends is getting Civ 5, but he only has enough money for the game and one DLC. I know the game is a lot better with both, but he's really in a tight situation financially, so he can only afford one. I was thinking he should just get Brace New World, but Gods & Kings adds so much content that I'm not sure. Would it be better to go with just one, or tell him to hold off for a little bit and wait for a sale? I'm aware that the game goes on sale very often, but he's really hyped up to play the game since he just got a new PC. If you guys could give some insight as to what he should do in this situation, that would be great. Also, is Civ:BE any good? He was considering getting that instead of Civ 5 altogether but I've always been told that it's a bad game. I'd go ahead and ask that seperately in the BE forum, but I'm bound to get biased answers. So, if anyone of you have tried BE, how is it?
Well, When it comes to DLCs and addons of that kind I really think that they are kinda useless in most games, I personally think that DLCs are quite expensive and useless in Civilization V because the game is already well made and I do not think it might need any kind of modification to make it "better" it mostly depends on the player and the way you like playing the game, however, if I was going to recommend you a DLC then it would be "Brave New World" I've heard it has some good features you will surely like if you wanna make the game "more enjoyable" but it is up to you.
I don't think CIV:BE is a bad game as well but if your friend only has limited cash to spare then I would way it would be better off being spent on CIV 5 instead. I think it would be a good idea to hold off for a bit more since the new version will be released soon and I imagine prices for both the game itself and all the DLC that comes with it will drop down in price significantly once that happens.
Gods & Kings is probably the best DLC if you want to only buy one, I personally would just simply play Civ as it is because the game is good enough without any addons and wait for a sale, the game and DLCs will be discounted with Civ VI coming up.
Gods & Kings would be my personal favourite since I believe the changes make a bigger impact on usual gameplay than any other DLC. That being said, Brave new World is nothing to ignore. My tip is to always wait for some kind of sale or a reducement in price. The Civ 6 release seems to be a good opportunity, though that's happening in October. The choice is his, only he knows how much he can wait and / or spend. As for Beyond Earth, I find it lacking identity.. it doesn't have the same style as previous Civ games, in my opinion. It is something special, don't get me wrong, but I'd take Civ 5 over it any day of the week.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! He ended up just going for Gods & Kings because he really loved playing Civ 5 vanilla, and I ensured him that the DLC added a lot to the game. He was leaning towards BE at the beginning, but once he played Civ 5, he told me that he didn't want to play any other game for a week or two. I think we've all been there and I definitely felt the same way as him in the past! Maybe we'll both get BE before Civ 6 comes out, just so we can experience it and see what all the fuss is about. Honestly, from the gameplay I've seen, the game doesn't look like it deserves all of the flak it's been getting. Sure, it's not exactly a complete upgrade from Civ 5, but damn does it look futuristic. Come to think of it, I've actually been looking for a futuristic type of simulation game for a while so this might be right up my alley. Again, thanks for all the suggestions!
