Is Destiny an MMORPG?

    I've been thinking, can Destiny be considered an MMO? I've seen contradicting opinions on this. Some people say it is while some argues it's not. Do you think Destiny has the elements to be considered an MMORPG? I know RPG is there because there are RPG elements but the MMO aspect of it is rather confusing.

    well you do play online, and the maps are massive so Massive Multiplayer Online game it is...

    It doesn't really seem like one to me.. It has elements but It's certainly not an MMORPG, It's an MMOFPS at best..

    MMOG = Massive Multiplayer Online Game. If the game contains servers that contain hundreds to thousands of players in a non-room/non-lobby based sort of game, then it is considered an MMOG.

    Is it an RPG? In an RPG, a character has some sort of progression and leveling. The main element of an RPG is that you either create a character or play an existing one and take that character through the story, while leveling it up.

    Is it an FPS? The actual question is: is it a shooter? If it's a shooter, then is it in first person? If so, then it's an FPS.

    What if an FPS game have RP elements? The bigger question is: does it focus more on the Shooter aspect or the Role Playing aspect? If it focuses more on the Shooter, then it's an Action-RPG. If it focuses more on Role Playing, then it's simply an RPG.

    So in the case of Destiny, it is a hybrid MMO with Action-RPG as its genre. Just remember that the term "MMOG" is not a genre. It refers to its game type. I say Destiny is a hybrid MMO because although it's open world, it doesn't pit the player into a traditional open world where everyone can see everyone. Players can only see each other through a matching system.

    The fact that you have to stay inline to play the game proves that it's an MMO. The second thing is that there are a lot of RPG elements in this game like upgrading your weapon, leveling up, skilling up, crafting and few other features that makes this game a MMORPG.

    Apparently they are calling it "shared world shooter" instead of an MMO. It's MMO but not quite, it's RPG but not quite as well so it's referred to as shared world.

    In destiny you'll embody a character that evolves on that journey. Unlike an MMO, the entire experience is built around heart-pounding action that you'll see through the eyes of your hero
