Is Final Fantasy 7 overrated?

Final Fantasy is a good game and it definitely propelled the Final Fantasy series into unknown heights of popularity. However, I cannot understand some people call it the best in the series. The graphics were very blocky, the story was cliche, and the ending left a lot to be desired. I'm not saying that FF7 is bad, I'm just saying that it's overrated. Agree or disagree?

I agree. It's a pretty good game but a lot of people still call it the best JRPG ever and such. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it was the first JRPG for many people and nostalgia.

Definitely not, as a matter of fact I would say its 'underrated' Its atleast in the top3 best of the franchise... and its the first real honest to goodness rpg i've ever played... you never forget your first...

I wouldn't say overrated, but it's definitely overhyped when people call it the best game ever. A lot of games that hold that moniker is always subject to criticism.

No way the 1st time I played 7 was after I beat X and I fell in love with the game it’s just overall a great game if you can get passed the low graphics I feel it’s still one of the top FF games to this day, but I may be wrong since I stopped buying consoles after the XBOX and PS2.

The best of its time. Perpetuated into the current time as being one of the most memorable console role playing games to date. So in ratio to when it was released to the amount of console role playing games today, FF7 garnered a solid following.

So no, I don't think it is either over hyped or over rated. I think people should understand that the game doesn't match up to modern games in terms of their evolution of visuals, effects, sound and game play mechanics, but it matches up by game play standards based on when it was released to how it held up over time.

Would people say Pac Man and Galaga are over rated and over hyped games? It's unfair to say they suck based on today's standards, but they're both Grandfathers/mothers of a time when they were the gods of all games. Same with FF7. It was a spectacular game for its time. Could you say the same for the modern Final Fantasies? Some could, but many wouldn't. Final Fantasy X+ have fantastic graphics, good music and nice game play, but the new games just don't give me the same feeling of "spectacular" and "memorable" as Final Fantasy 6 and 7.

I think it's extremely overrated. HOWEVER I am glad it exists because HONESTLY I like the FFVII spinoffs more then the main game.

The game play and the story line in Final Fantasy Seven was one of the best I would think. However, That is all I feel it has going for it. I love when a game has amazing graphics so when I first played Final Fantasy Ten on my Play Station Two back then, I was in awe of how beautiful it looked.

I wouldn't say it is over rated or underrated but it does get a lot of hype and support from its fans. Understandable as to why. I personally prefer the Final Fantasy series that had much more advanced graphics. I only played Final Fantasy Seven once and I felt that was more than enough for me.

I disagree. I also place it as the best in the series and one of my favorite games of all time. Yeah, by today's standards it's graphics aren't the best, but I have played some great games that had graphics that wouldn't have impressed Atari, circa 1981. It was a pretty diverse game for being a non-MMO game and only containing three CDs. Remember, this game was released around 1997. The only online community out there was Ultima Online and you probably know those graphics aren't great.

At the time of its release, it had a solid combination of storyline, graphics and gameplay. With good timing and a great marketing campaign, FF7 became the success that it did. Honestly Xenogears outstrips FF7 by a good mile and a half but was severely overshadowed by FF7's commercial success. I mean at the time of its release, there really wasn't any game like it. It kind of paved the way for other JRPGs to make their headway to the 'Golden Era' so to speak.

I don't think it's overrated. I think this game is god xD
Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic, but for me, this was simply perfect on its time. But I agree, Xenogears was better (if you forget the cd 2....cd1 was incredible) and maybe others, like suikoden 2, are better too.
But in any case ff7 is, for me, one of the greatest rpgs from all the time, maybe not the best, but one of the greatest for sure.

To be blunt, yes it is a very overated game. However, it's still an extremely good game in it's on right. Though, as far as being the very best, I don't really see that as possible given all of the other choices for Jrpg or even rpg games that were coming out around that time frame or later or earlier. For just it's time alone, yeah, I could see it. However, I wouldn't call it the best jrpg ever.

Maybe it's not the best rpg from all the times, but I believe that some of its succes was because when the game was released, the graphics were amazing (since that moment all the rpgs were completely 3d) and well, snes bring us great jrpgs, but it wasn't a style of games so popular as it is nowadays.

I think its a situation of when the game came out it looked amazing and everyone had to play it. Its a great game with an amazing story and to be honest I think it completely blows most modern RPGs out of the water in all regard except graphics, but is it the best RPG of all time like many claim? Not a chance. There are so many great RPGs out there that I can't call it the best. RPGs are so diverse that its hard to compare certain games. I mean how do you compare Skyrim to FF7. It may be one of the better JRPGs but even then Im not prepared to say its better than FFX, FF6, or Chrono Trigger.

I wouldn't call it over-rated. Many of the people who hype the game up are those who played it shortly after release. At the time it was (I believe) the first real 3d RPG out there and was miles ahead of the competition. I wasn't there at the time but FF VII was the first 3d RPG I have ever played and it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. FF VII definitely set the standard for newer games. Compared to the games that are released these days it might not stack up, but as some people here have said already it'd be unfair to compare the new games to the old games.

FFVII is a great game, but it's undoubtedly overrated to some degree. It's not perfect like some people would have you believe.

It is. But it's pretty much because of nostalgia reasons. FF7 was many people's first JRPG, so it's the one that everyone holds their standards up to. I mean, it's definitely a fine game, but I don't think it's even a best FF game, yet alone the best RPG.. But yeah, I do understand, my favorite is FF8 just because I've played it first, and I know it's definitely not even close to being the best one in the series.

I feel very much the same way about Final Fantasy IX! I know there might be better games in the Final Fantasy series. However, at the same time I can't help but love the ninth game in the series the most out of all of them due to it being my first window into the world of Final Fantasy.

I think Final Fantasy 9 is one of the best in the series too, tbh. And actually, the fandom seems to agree in general. :D But yeah, the first one is always the best for you, I assume, since it's all new and exciting, isn't it :)

To be honest, I'd heard of Final Fantasy 7 and the other games that had come out for it when I finally got around to playing 9. However, it always seemed so overhyped and simply uninteresting since people kept shoving 'play 6' or 'play 7' or 'play 8' down my throat. As a matter of fact, if it hadn't been for the cover art of 9 being so drastically different from those 3 games, I'd probably of never even gotten into Final Fantasy.
