Is it worth it to start now?

Over the years, I've heard a lot about WoW. I've peered over my friend's shoulders as they played but never actually taken part. Recently, there's been tons of rumors that's it's been on a steep downhill slide. Is it worth getting into this late in the 'game'?

Well it depends on what you like to play. If it's PvP you might end up being disappointed from the current pvp. If it's PvE you will need to spend probably at least month and a half after you reach 90 to complete the legendary cloak quest before you can have any chance in getting into a proper heroic raiding guild. If you are casual PvE player then you will definitely like the fact that it takes about 2 weeks to get good enough gear to do normal raids.
Since an expansion will be coming out I believe the best option is start playing 2-3 months before the explansion comes out so you can level up few charcaters, level up professions maybe prepare some gold for the expansion :p

Not really worth starting now in my opinion. The glory days of WoW are long past and the subscriber numbers are dropping rapidly. The world just feels empty these days except for the starter zones and high level areas. I'd recommend you start with a newer MMO and go with the community.

I think so too that it's a little too late to be jumping in now. It has been so many years since it's released you'll either get slaughtered or can't find anyone low level enough to play with. If you are really thinking of playing maybe Mist of Panderia is a good place to start, don't quote me on this because I've quit WoW a long time ago.

I would say no, but if you have real life friends that play the game it could be a little more fun personally I would try and see if you can get a trial of the game you may or may not like it.

I'd say no. As someone that played all the way back in Vanilla, you would have missed WAY too much for it to even be worth it to you. Sucks that you are jumping in now. WOTLK and before were some of the greatest times in WoW and MMO history imo.

You should play the trial. You can level up to level 20, so you'll have a good experience of the game.
If you like it, feel free to play for a subscription. You can drop it at any time.

This is an awesome idea. Despite the fact that the game has had some significant changes in direction resulting in a strange end-game experience, WoW remains an awesome game, especially to a new person. There's quite a bit of content to clear as someone new to the game, so you will definitely get your money's worth if you do decide to purchase it. The trial will allow you to level up enough to decide if the play-style of the game is something you enjoy.

Definitely try out the trial before you jump in to it, another option that I may/may not be recommending would be to try out a private server. There are private servers out there which are the exact same as vanilla/BC/WoTLK to give you an idea before you jump in and spend money on it. The game has changed a lot, I honestly think its a shame for a new player to have a completely different experience but then again at the same time the game would be more new-player friendly than ever before!

It's really hard to say. I wouldn't commit too much into the game before giving it a good try. It's very much so a hit or miss kind of game depending on if you enjoy it or not. A lot of what keeps people interested in the game happens at the end game, which is about 90 levels away from starting. I think it is a very unique game though, and I really enjoy the controls and fluidity of it all.

Is WoW as fun as it was back in the day? Well that's entirely subjective to be honest.

I could make the argument that the game is a shade of what it was back in the BC days when you had to actually form your own reputation on your realm to be included with dungeons and raids rather than simply queue up with randoms from other servers. It used to be a much more community focused game. Now it barely is at all.

But some people don't care about that at all. And despite the fact that it's glory days are far gone, it is still a great quality MMORPG with fun mechanics and lore.

So yes it is still worth it to start now. Just don't expect the kind of experience that garnered the game its massive popularity in the first place.

I have heard WoW is really addicting and all that I was just wondering if it is easy to level up or will I have to spend 4 hours getting to level 20 and do 35 quest's?

Yeah, I'm surprised more people aren't advocating at least doing the trial. You get 30 days and a pretty decent cap to get started and get a feel for things. I would say this is plenty of time and playing to find out if you'll like it or what kind of play style you'll have.

To be honest, I wouldn't start playing it now. I started playing when the Burning Crusade expansion was released and that expansion was completely awesome. I all went downhill from there and now I don't really enjoy playing WoW anymore. Maybe for someone who doesn't know how it used to be, the game will be ok now, but for me it's not.

WoW has never been easier for new players to get started. It's very easy to get to level 90 in a week and there are plenty of ways for even the most casual of players to get geared up and do some LFR raiding. Next expansion, you'll even be able to boost a brand new character all the way to level 90 instantly.

WoW will always have appealing aspects to many people; that's what has kept the game alive as long as it has. The community is a lot different than it used to be. There's a lot of new players now that Blizzard has made it so easy for beginners to get started. A lot of veterans have stuck around just for the sake of it. I'd suggest joining a fun guild that has a lot to offer and participate in guild activities as much as you can.

Blizzard has dumbed down PvE a lot since the glory days. Leveling hardly requires any labor; dungeons and LFR have made experience grinding a breeze. Even gear farming has become a little bit easier than what it used to be.

Take my advice and play the trial for a while, get familiar with how the game has progressed and see if you want to stay. Many people are returning to WoW for nostalgia, and I don't blame you. I still get the urge to play every now and then. ;)

I don't understand any of the comments here that say it's not worth it to start now. The game still has millions of subscribers. The levels of subscribers has definitely dwindled over the years, but there are still a lot of active players. Especially since they did cross-server merging, it's a lot faster to queue up for dungeons.

There are many pros and cons that only veteran WoW players would care about. If you're into open world exploration, story following with lots of dungeons, tons of different types of quests with a few starting areas to fork off from, with good elements of PvP diversity, then I suggest you give WoW a try. At least give the starter a try. If it isn't fun, then uninstall and move on.

I've been an on and off subscriber since February 2005, about 3 months after it came out. Lots of good memories. These days I rarely play, but when I do, I spend a lot of time in it. Plus playing with my wife using heirlooms and the triple experience takes away some of the monotony of leveling.

Of course it is still worth it to start now. The game has gotten better and better. Millions of bugs are fixed, you find guides everywhere on the internet, people start over and love to train with you, ...

I think it's just gone downhill since BC, so I don't know. As said above, start a trial account, see how you like it.

That depends on if you like this genre of game. If you simply aren't interested in games like this, then don't bother. However, if it's on a steep hill down, you might be able to get further in the game via packs and expansions at less of a cost to you.
