Is there a horror/rpg hybrid game?

Is there such a game as rpg horror game? We have action horror and survival horror but do you think that there is such a game? If you've played one before what is that game?

I don't think their is one, but I could be wrong it would be an interesting concept though.

I don't think there is since RPG generally means you level up and stuff, which would kind of ruin the immersion. I guess the closest thing I've seen is the mansion level in Vampire: The Masquerade and maybe The Secret World

Come to think of it, there really isn't any game that has survival horror and RPGs elements. I guess it's kind of hard since RPGs require combat and combat isn't exactly in line with survival horror.

Project Zomboid for PC is pretty much a horror/RPG hybrid. It's more like the classic Fallout type of RPG, though. Isometric view and all. It's indie, still in beta. I really recommend it, though, especially if you want a zombie game about surviving instead of about killing shit.

I also think Shadow Hearts on PS2 was a horror/RPG hybrid, with the gameplay being turn-based JRPG gameplay with some nice twists. I don't remember how horror it was, because I played it long ago and my memory sucks.

There was also... Koudelka, I think, for PS1, which I remember even less but you might wanna look it up.

I've played Shadow Hearts on the PS2 and it wasn't really horror, more like suspense. This Project Zomboid sounds interesting, might look it up and see what kind of game it is. What's Koudelka, sounds familiar I'm going to check it out too but I doubt that I can find the game now even if I'm interested.

Only place you would maybe find that game is ebay and chances are if it's good and hard to find it might be way overpriced.

Don't get me started on that damned mansion, I don't think I've ever been as scared in a game.
I had to play through it in the middle of the day with the windows open and the TV on, and even then I was a bit shaken up...

I was going to suggest Vampire: The Masquerade too. A lovely game, overall not THAT scary but some of the levels are really well done.

Heh, possible. Always the problem with old games, especially on consoles due to the lack of digital releases... at least PC has stuff like GOG.

Perhaps something like Requiem or an old-school one like Dark Eden (looks like Diablo 1/2). Basically your typical rpg but with more blood and supposedly scary NPC models. I don't think horror rpgs will ever have bring about the same level of panic or fear like Dead Space or Amnesia since you're bound to get used to it the longer you play.

What's wrong with the mansion, was it really that scary. I've only played the first couple of levels last time but stopped due to motion sickness I got playing the game so I didn't reach that part. What made the mansion so creepy?

I didn't find it very scary but lots of people did. If you get immersed, there's some poltergeist stuff going on. It's mostly atmosphere.

I think a horror/RPG game could be great. Would put a nice spin on dungeon crawling, being unsure what's going to pop out at you in the dark. This would be an interesting mix, maybe as you progress you start learning all kinds of arcane spells.

Sounds very interesting. I'm going to look for videos on that and see for myself how scary it really was. Kind of a waste I didn't get to complete it last time.

I don't really think it's scary to watch, especially since the graphics are kind of dated now. It did give me the creeps back in the day but I don't think it's really anything that translates well to video

I don't think you would get the same scare effect if you watch the video, but at the time there had never been a game sequence that scary I think.
You would be afraid of going down hallways as they started creaking and you would hear voices, the wind, stuff flying around, etc.

Nothing wrong it with, quite the opposite: it was done perfectly! The sounds, the poltergeist stuff... wow. Somehow it really reminded me of Stephen Kings book the Shining. A large creepy isolated building with something paranormal going on.

I doubt watching a video of it will do much for you. It's a whole different thing when you are actually playing, turning around corners etc.

Sweet Home is an RPG like Dragon Warrior. It only came out in japan original but there are translation patchs for it. It actually inspired the makers of Resident Evil. The System shock games qualify as horror and are quite good but the first one hasn't aged terribly well.

Well, there's the granddaddy of them - Vampire (Masquerade or Requiem). Not everyone's cup of tea, but does the job.
Call of Cthulhu is cool. Various editions exist.
Heroes of Horror is a horror supplement for D&D 3.5.
Eclipse Phase is a space-horror kind of game, among other things. Love it, personall
