I loved the way the combat engine worked, and the speed with which the hits etc. were calculated. All other MMO's have failed at this (Aion, Rift etc.). The difficulty, and sense of reward for accomplishing something was uniquely EQ. Unlike WoW or other instant gratification games. The pain caused by failure was real, the loss of experience, and even level, was unique. For those that came along later, the game probably didn't have that hook. The thing that draws you in deeper and deeper. Before C3 (Koadic's Endless Intellect) removed the need for 10 minute med breaks at the hill in Overthere after a series of fights. Before the Nexus provided access to anywhere you wanted to go instantly, rather than having to use boats and your feet. When dying on a raid literally meant a 2 hour corpse run, or you would lose all your gear. Now, you just run to the Guild hall, and pay a paltry amount of coin to summon your corpse.
